Re: MTD Yardman Transaxle Rebuild

There was a time when I thought about selling a major portion of my tools, I thought I could easily sell my 3 piece Roll-Around with tools, ( about $2500.00 paid value) for $500.00 , then I saw others, some even MUCH better than mine, and I talked with some of those selling (or trying to) them, everyone I talked to said the same thing, tools were dirt cheap at the outlet discount stores, and very few young people were interested in using their hands for anything except a keyboard, touch-pad or touch-screen, not much interest in being in the " Mechanical Fields or D.I.Y. gang " . I always see tools for sale at yard sales, breaks my heart to see a $20.00 to $35.00 ratchet selling for a $1.00 or under $5.00, sockets that originally cost between $5.00 to $50.00 bucks ( from Craftsman to Mac & Snap-On and some GOOD older brands, Proto, SK-Wayne, Vulcan, etc. etc. etc. , ) I love the way a certain tool feels in my hand, (guess the Millenniels were born without those "feelings" , I have many of the same type tools, but there's always that certain ratchet, and extension you choose to use for a particular task. Most all these guys decided to TRY to pass them over to a family or even a good friends son/daughter that might be interested, to no avail. One guy gave me the idea of even donating them to a vocational school, great idea, then the GENTLEMAN ?? he discussed it with said the school was budgeted for tools, BUT, HE would gladly "take them off his hands" ( FREE of course) ...yeah RIGHT !! I may yet find the right person looking to buy or even give them to, but I'm not not looking very hard anymore !! ..

was hoping to bolt the bolster and steering pivot back on tonight, but the seal for the steering gear is damaged. Brand new part, I open the box and the seal is folded over and deformed...Now I have to wait for a few days, since the only place that had the seal is in Windham, ME.

Do you have Men's Sheds in the USA ?
AFAIK we exported the idea world wide.
If so and you want to send your tools where they will be appreciated donate to one.
If you don't have a Men's Shed locally, start one.
A very worthwhile enterprise that you would fit into perfectly.
The local shed here reconditions dead mowers and gives them to pensioners.
They recondition dead push bikes & give them to kids
They do engineering jobs for TAD ( Technical Aid for Disabled ). And lately they have been taking in "troubled boys" and teaching them metal shop, welding & spray painting

Boo,

Try this https://mensshed.org/.
The original aim was to get single old men out of their houses where they were slowly deteriorating into the grave.
Theory behind it is women talk face to face, usually over a coffee & vino and will discuss every tiny little health problem they have or think they have.
Blokes won't do this but they will talk quite freely side by side and more so if they are doing something.
I noticed this years ago when I was an active RROC ( rolls Royce Owners Club ) member.
The "paupers" section used to meet at a well equipted members garage were we worked on other members cars, usually a major job and you booked your car in so they were done in a logical mannar to reinforce what you had done previously , thus the "knowledge" was being handed down but the revelations about personal problems was astounding.
Aussie males have this "stoic braveness" where we suffer in silence till we die from treatable problems and as for mental health we had the worst senior male suicide rate in the western world.
originally they concentrated on wood working as there is something instringically satisifing in turning a lump of lumber into something.
After a long while the government realised this was a winner and put some funds into it then gave it tax free charity status so if I had some obsolete equipment in my factory I could donate it at full retail value to the Shed & get a nice tax deduction for it.
When Lowers & Woolworths attempted to leap into the hardwear business and become the dominant player overnight ( Westfarmers control 85% of the retail & wholesale hardwear sales in OZ which is why good tools cost 3 times here what they do there. The company ( Masters) which went broke in less than 18 months used to donate all the returned good to their local shed and the boys here always had 6 months worth of stuff to fix.

YEeeesshhh .... a really crisp 42deg. this morn @ 5:30 A.M. glad there's no wind , yesterday we had gusts up to 25 knots, saw on national weather where you guys in New England area are catching hell with that storm, Goomba, batten down the hatches !! tie the wifey and yourself to the main mast, tis a Nor-Easter a comin !! ( LOL ) got the heat on set @ 77deg, nice n toasty but the heat-strips are kicked in help this heat-pump. I hate these POS things, if this @#*^T$#@%$# thing has any more problems I'm going back to straight A/C with heat-strips, the unit came with the house and the damn thing was only 7 years old and out of warranty, cost me $800.00 + bucks last summer to replace the condenser ... POS !! Ahhh well, life goes on, ANYWAY, a good morning to ya'll, hope all is well, Hey you guys up north gettin your snow equipment in shape ?? could you imagine a snow storm with precipitation like we had with Harvey, Maria, & Irma, you guys would still be tunneling out !!
