Re: Vasili Alexandrovich Arkhipov
Ane we should do the same with Korea as we did with USSR.
Position 1000's of missiles along the border with the South, and with China .
Get Pouting on side & have him position 1000's of missiles along hid East Coast & the Manchurian border .
A few 1000 more in Japan the Philipines.
Don't even need to be real ( and better not real Nukes in the Phillipines )
Get the UN to enforce a no fly zone along the Border to prevent non authorised imports & Blockade the ports for the same reason.
Like the USSR Kim will decimate his own economy by diverting all resources into military production.
Then turn a blind eye to China supporting a lower order Kim to over throw the current one and set up a pupet North Korean government and the deal is we ignore what they do in Korea for abandoning the South China Sea fiasco.
China gets the buffer they want between the South Koreans & its mainland border.
South Korea can resume relations & trade with North Korea without being sent broke by a reunification.
The USA & USSR are then dealing with a rational government with a stable military & borders.
Royalties from the China Sea oil fields can then be used to bring North Korea into the 19th century.
Japan & South Korea are no longer in fear of being caught in the cross fire.
Doc and Boo,
You guys are great!! Doc, thanks for finding another picture of Vasili, I hadn't thought of that, and Boo, thanks for getting the picture I sent you into jpeg form. I appreciate it.
I had received word of his award from USSVI (United States Submarine Veterans Inc.) and thought it might give you guys who are old enough to remember, an idea of what was going on in 1962 during the "Cold War".. (I think maybe WE should have been the ones that presented an award to him!! We all have a great deal to thank him for.)
As a point to ponder: The fact that the USSR had given their submarines the authorization to launch a nuclear weapon on the say-so of just three of it's officers, shows just how serious the situation was. That is very unlike Soviet military hierarchy. Offering autonomy to any military unit is quite extraordinary. Even we would have expected to receive orders from the Commander and Chief to launch anything beyond standard munitions.
I graduated H.S. in 1962 and joined the Submarine Service a couple years later. I can remember seeing Hawk missile sites along the Florida Keys in the summer of '62.
We'd all hate to return to those fearful times. That makes it all the worse to see North Korea beating their drums. I had the opportunity to 'work' with ROK Marines in 1970 and they are tough people. I'm sure those in the Northern half of the country are no different.
