DYT4000 (917.273638) 18.5 Intek - Dies When Brake is Disengaged

So it was the spring loaded grey connector. The spring has pushed through on the inside plastic shorting the seat switch connection wires. This circuit should be open with a rider in the seat.

DYT4000 (917.273638) 18.5 Intek - Dies When Brake is Disengaged

Thanks for the reply. I cross-connected the pigtail to the seat switch wires with a test wire and the mower still dies every time when I release the brake pedal.

DYT4000 (917.273638) 18.5 Intek - Dies When Brake is Disengaged

Cranks, starts and idles fine, but as soon as I release the brake the engine dies instantly. I checked seat safety switch which is normally closed-when no rider is on the mower and open when a rider is sitting on the mower. I am looking into the interlock switch now, but not 100% sure on how...

Brake Pedal Pulsing/Bouncing Drive Belt Shredded

OK, I found out what happened when I put the new belt on 3 times. lol The bolt that goes through the clutching idle pulley and the frame came loose resulting in pulley sag. Due to the sag the belt was riding too low on the stationary idler causing the belt to jump off. I did fail to to put the...

Brake Pedal Pulsing/Bouncing Drive Belt Shredded

When mowing I can smell slight burning rubber and the brake pedal bounces. This drive belt was replaced about two years ago and is now mostly shredded. Mower is the 917.271022. Any ideas? Maybe an idler pulley? Thanks for help/suggestions.

    SV610-3213 Fuel Delivery Problem?

Here is the final problem. The nipple from a fuel filter broke off inside the last section of fuel line connecting to the carburetor-wasn't me. I had blew air through the lines and observed fuel flow out of the line, so I thought flow was OK. Today I decided to remove and LOOK through every...

    SV610-3213 Fuel Delivery Problem?

If you are running along and the anti-backfire valve loses power the mower continues running? My understanding is the valve closes as soon as engine is turned off blocking off fuel so it does not end up in the exhaust causing the "backfire" as the engine winds down those last few strokes. One...

    SV610-3213 Fuel Delivery Problem?

Seems the ignition switch has been opened before and the internals were put together incorrectly causing a short to the blue wire in all positions except off. Fixed this and I had significant improvement to the longevity with blades engaged, but fuel starvation is still problem. I can mow at...

    SV610-3213 Fuel Delivery Problem?

Has to be something going on inside this engine. Replaced coil due to wire damage and no change. OK I'm desperate so I will try a new spark plug.

    SV610-3213 Fuel Delivery Problem?

Definitely not one fitted on this mower that I can see on the speed control bracket or the air cleaner base according to p.21 of the Kohler service manual. Manual also states, "Some engines are equipped with one of two optional pulse fuel pumps." I am not convinced that this mower should not...

    SV610-3213 Fuel Delivery Problem?

Thanks! I was wondering if it required a fuel pump or not. The service manual only states there are two-types while leaving open the possibility that no fuel pump is also a possibility. Seems I ran across another very similar engine without a fuel pump so I kinda moved-on from the lack of fuel...

    SV610-3213 Fuel Delivery Problem?

Thanks for all the input everyone. I did put a new carb on and the new carb acts exactly like the old carb. To test vapor lock, I setup a floor fan on high to blow heat from the exhaust away from the carb since there is no heat shield on this mower (checked diagram to verify). I let the bowl...

    SV610-3213 Fuel Delivery Problem?

Removed tank, and verified that I do not have any blockage from the fuel tank through rubber line as it connects to the carburetor. Next, I checked the fuel solenoid and it has 13.7-14.0v at WOT when the engine is acting up and cutting out. Moving governor works fine when the engine decides to...

    SV610-3213 Fuel Delivery Problem?

Thanks for the reply/suggestions. If I spray carb cleaner in it the engine will take off again. I will go through and check connectors and wires. This morning I started engine and let it idle with blades engaged for 10 minutes then increased engine speed then it died. I am puzzled.

    SV610-3213 Fuel Delivery Problem?

Engine starts OK, but dies when the blades are engaged. Checked seat safety switch, replaced carburetor and removed fuel cap- none of these made a difference. If I turn the blades off quickly and throttle to choke the engine will continue running, so it appears the engine is not getting enough...

    Emulsion Tube Bent?

Thanks for the suggestion. Tried bending it back, but tube just bends back. Noticed the brass ring around that tube has some damage and the emulsion tube looks like it has been pushed all the way into the carb as well. Ordered a carb for $15. Mower keeps dying when the blades are engaged, but...

New lifters won't seem to stop pecking. Let it idle for about 3 minutes and still pecking. This normal? Reassembly states do not pump lifters up before installation. New pushrods do not have the hole like the old ones I replaced. Thinking of putting old pushrods with hole back in...

Thanks. Realized I can make a template from the bottom of the crankcase. EDIT: Attached is a redesigned 3D printable variant of the KO1031 endplay tool, which should be OK for my lawnmowers. I don't suggest this alternate tool if your mower is rocket propelled. :)

Yes; old rods did have the hole. Polished all the rotating surfaces today and they look much better now. I think I will use full synthetic in this old mower upon reassembly since "she" has made it this far (24 years). Any chance someone on here has the cam end play tool and could scan so I...

Wondering if the pros could give opinions on these journals and surfaces. Mower was hammering like a rod knocking while running and cutting fine. Turned out to be a cam in two pieces. DYT 4000 (917273638 ) - Steering slipping

531 Hours- Popping out carb, running terrible, hard to crank.

Oh yeah, it was obvious. But I used a dial gauge when the engine was still assembled to avoid guess work. Then confirmed with calipers when the cam was removed. This thing due for a DIY crank polish and a fresh rod bearing? EDIT: This thing even have a rod bearing? Not seeing one in the diagrams.

531 Hours- Popping out carb, running terrible, hard to crank.

Engine torn down. Exhaust lobe is almost gone; 1.070 specs call for 1.240. Intake lobe is exactly 1.240. I'm curious how the intake lobe is perfect and the exhaust nearly gone-valve spring pressure or heat radiation maybe, heck I don't know. No major scars in the cylinder walls. Didn't feel a...

531 Hours- Popping out carb, running terrible, hard to crank.

Shook the muffler around like it owed me money and found this stuff. Not one penny came out of this thing! :) One is clearly the flat-head screw from the Walbro carburetor. The other metal chunks...no idea. Cam lift for exhaust was .074 and Intake .246. These specs close for 31P777? I checked...

Thanks for the reply Bert. Here is what I can tell you. If disengaged it rolls fine. Last thing I did was mow the lawn (worked fine), shut off then pushed mower (I did not disengage) dragging tires through grass about 30 feet. Week later fired her up and she won't budge (forward or reverse)...
