    FS56 string trimmer gear grease

I just bought a FS56 and I do not see a place to grease the head. I do not think 56 needs greasing.

    On fuel and string

I finally figured out how to reload the spool. I have always had cheap trimmers that have to have the spool removed and manually loaded. How convenient if the dealer would have given my some instructions on loading. Also, I saw a video on youtube that stated that all Stihl trimmers come with...

    On fuel and string

I gave my new Stihl 56 a good workout today. Man, am I pleased with this trimmer. I had issues with line melting together and not feeding well but I can excuse that because I was cutting a lot of really thick, heavy weeds. Maybe I'm not loading it properly. The manual says the the loading...

    On fuel and string

I just bought a Stihl FS59. Sure wanted the 91 but not able today. Anyway, the 56 sounds like a beast and so far My little bit of weeds aren't even a legitimate test. Gotta go find some WEEDS! So, I bought some fresh 87 octane, filled it up and ran it a few minutes. THEN I read the manual and...

Carburetor diaphram cover plate vent hole

I opened it up. The diaphram does not seem damages and I see no obvious holes. However, the diaphram is stiff. So I'll replace it and the gasket.

Carburetor diaphram cover plate vent hole

I figured something along those lines. Another thing, I was reading that sitting with old gas will sticky-up the jet. Don't these things have a little needle thingy under the diaphram?

Carburetor diaphram cover plate vent hole

I have a troy bilt string trimmer, The carb has a metal plate covering the diaphram. The plate has a vent hole in it. I just replaced the primer bulb on this trimmer. When I pump the primer bulb it fills with gas and gas pours out of the vent hole on the plate. I'm thinking this is not right...

    Stihl's 4-mix engine

When googling 4 cycle trimmers there is no mention of a 4-mix engine. They all use separate oil and gas. Maybe thats because Stihl's 4-mix is such a recent addition to the market. So, is Stihl the only company offering a 4-mix engine?

    Gotta make a trimmer decision

The price for a carb doesn't seem so bad vs the hassle of rebuilding one to me. Probably different if your working on a lot of them.

Thanks for all your input, you guys. I guess I'll be going to the store and handle them to see whats comfortable and weigh that along with the price.

    Gotta make a trimmer decision

I was told that the 94 was lighter than the 91 wgich is important but that price ($359?) is pretty steep for me. BTW, what terminology do we use when we talk about 4 and 2 cycle engines vs 4 and 2 cycle fuel?

    Gotta make a trimmer decision

I was looking at the Stihl FS91 trimmer. Thats about my price limit...$300ish. So many people rave about Stihl. But now I am swayed toward Echo because I bought an Echo chainsaw and I am impressed with it. I have seen a lot of people swear that Echo is right up there with Stihl and as far as...

Why won't the throttle control close the chock?

Problem solved. I stumbled onto this video that shows my choke and the little finger, The choke is activated at 8:46 in the video. So I bent the finger (carefully) back to where it should be. The little finger just barely touches the chock lever, but I guess thats all it takes.

Why won't the throttle control close the chock?

I have a 4hp B&S model 122707-0185-01 that is mounted on a DR Trimmer/Mower model 4010954. I have it running good and it starts right up when choked. Trouble is that I have to set the choke manually as the little finger that grabs the plastic choke lever is possibly bent and not able to trigger...

    John Deere D160 B&S 44S977-0001G1 surges

Could not see a differance in the jets through a magnifier so I just installed them. Tractor runs like a Deere. Not bad for a true backyard mechanic and it didn't cost me a cent. Learned a lot too.

    John Deere D160 B&S 44S977-0001G1 surges

Lucky me! I got out the old trusty metal detector and found the jets in the grass right next to each other. Both o-rings are in place. Now, are they both the same or is one the left and one the right? I found a "12" on one but the other seems to have nothing on it.

    John Deere D160 B&S 44S977-0001G1 surges

O boy! Both jets are missing. there's a definite Einstein invention...jets than just lay there with no securing function.

    John Deere D160 B&S 44S977-0001G1 surges

I was not familiar with the jets yet. I haven't messed with this stuff since the 80s. Are you saying the jets are still where they should be but became unseated during disassembly? I'll go find a video about them.

    John Deere D160 B&S 44S977-0001G1 surges

I took the carb apart. No gaskets were damaged. I did not take the butterflies out. I did not remove that little 4 hole gasket in the center inside the bowl location. I sprayed carb cleaner through all the holes. Nothing was plugged. Only corrosion was in the bottom of the bowl. Reassembled and...

    John Deere D160 B&S 44S977-0001G1 surges

Ok, I been on youtube studying carb disassembly and boiling. One question. Will boiling remove stuck gaskets rubber seals without damaging them? Just wondering if theres a chance of avoiding a new rebuild kit.

    John Deere D160 B&S 44S977-0001G1 surges

My John Deere D160 with a B&S 44S977-0001G1 engine surges constantly unless choked at a precise amount. Pouring gas into carb makes it run smooth(er) until the excess gas is used up and then it surges again. I changed fuel filter, checked fuel lines for kinks and then I removed the carb...

    Cylinder wall gouge. Usable?

Briggs & Stratton Model # 135212. Seized the engine. I think the piston can be cleaned up. The rings are ok. Looks like the metal came off the cylinder wall and attached to the piston. Does a higher grade fuel do any good?

Ok. Thanks for all the info. An engine burning regular will acquire carbon buildup after time. Will higher octane do the same thing? Will higher octane clean any deposits from an engine?

Does a higher grade fuel do any good?

My new weed eater uses mid-grade fuel (89 octane). Thats what it was made to use. But my old lawn tractor has only ever had regular (87 octane) fed to it. Would mid-grade make a difference? Would it run better? Would it clean the internal parts of the engine? Or would it burn the engine up or...

    Kohler 24hp oil leak

Kohler (Courage?) 24hp, 2009 or 2010. The drive pullet under the engine is full of oil. I assume this is a bad seal. I hope this is an easy repair. Problem is, I saw a post that had the same issue but the problem was that the inner case, where the crank rests was worn thus causing the seal to go...

Have a chance to get a Montgomery Wards WS-66 chainsaw. Not sure of the bar length. Don't know the year, but its old. Any idea if this was considered a worthwhile saw. Looks like a mack truck compared to my McCulloch. Said to not been started in decades but it does turn over and the bar and...

Are walk behind chipper vacs any good?

I see an auction has a Troy bilt chipper vac (walk behind type)from 1992, model 47261. The pic looks like it is very clean. Said to "run" good. My question is, do these have enough suction to vacuum up thick thick leaves or are they from vacuuming lite dusting of leaves. I have a yard that gets...

    Clutch not disengaged?

McCulloch 130. I replaced bar bolt by removing front of engine enclosure and then removing gas tank. Now with it back together it seems that the clutch is not disengaged. I put the chain and bar on and the chain will not spin. I pulled the cord and the chain turns with the motor. Hmmm, that...

Broken bar bolt-how to remove without breaking casting

McCulloch 130. Bolt that holds bar on is broken. I removed front of saw and removed gas tank to access it. The bolt will not come out. Apparently there are knurls on bolt to make to fit tight. How do I remove the bolt without breaking the casting. I do not think a hammer is a safe way to break...

Can I gage raker teeth without a proper gage

Thanks for all the good advice. I did do the straight edge thing and the rakers mostly seemed right at the tops of the teeth or just a smidgen below. Can I gage raker teeth without a proper gage

My chain has been sharpened for years and years, and not by a person who is a good chain sharpener (me). I wonder, is it possible to tell if I should take a little off my rakers without using a proper raker gage? I stretched the chain out on a flat metal table and some of the rakers seem to be...

    Chainsaw won't fire

Well, I went out to look at it this morning. Decided to try to start it again before I went to get a new plug. What the heck? It started after a couple of pulls. I have no idea what was wrong. I don't understand how it could have been flooded since I pulled and pulled and pulled yesterday...

    Chainsaw won't fire

Pulled plug and I see spark at plug. Not a real impressive spark but I don't know what a tiny engine spark should look like. Plug is gapped at .025. Put a little gas in cylinder and still will not fire. If it has spark and there is gas in cylinder, isn't it impossible to not fire?

Stabilizer link - is it nessessary?

Cub Cadet LTX1050. I just found my stabilizer link in the garage. I had forgotten to put it on the mower. Is its sole purpose to keep the deck from moving sideways?
