If you have no spark with the kill wire removed, check these there things. 1. Coil mounted upside down. 2. Wrong coil air gap, should be be .010” 3. Wrong coil, should be Tecumseh part number 36344A. if not one of these three, bad coil.

If the paint got into the generator, through the vents, it’s not going to last long.

Just to let you know, that engine is about the cheapest engine Briggs makes.

First, check to see that the unit is in neutral and the PTO is off. Second, check that the battery cable going to the solenoid is tight and the battery ground cable is tight on the chassis connection. Third, do you hear the solenoid click when you try to start the engine?

Not common, but not unusual.

I’m guessing that on that model the temperature control linkage is hung up or thermo choke control is bad.

Post all Model and serial numbers for the unit and engine so we have a better idea of what you are dealing with.

Push the throttle control cable to the choke position. If you follow the cable down to the engine you’ll find where it is clamped to a plate. Loosen this clamp and push the entire cable forward as far as possible and tighten the clamp. Choke should now be fully closed.

It goes according to bolt size. If you have a 5/16”-18, you will use a 5/16” HeliCoils. 1/4“-20 use 1/4” and 3/8”-16 use 3/8.

If you are worried about popping wheelies going up and down, in my opinion the slope is too extreme for either unit. Only way to really answer this question is to tell you to test both units on your slope first. This is one time where your gut will give you a better answer than any opinions on...

Sounds like you have a coil with either has a hot short or hot open. Next time it happens check for spark at the plug. No spark bad coil.

Any ignition system which does not have points has a Hall Effect trigger embedded in the coil. You need a very, very $$$$ piece of equipment to test them. I know that everything you see on U-tube videos is the absolute truth, but this is the one time those idiots got it wrong.

You may see if your local dealer has either of these parts. Tecumseh/Peerless part number 790075 or MTD part number 761-0202. I’ve found many times they are interchangeable.

I also think it may be a fuel problem, but disagree about a rich running condition. More like a lean running condition where the carb cannot supply enough fuel when the PTO is engaged. A good cleaning and rebuild may help you out.

I always engage at full speed. That is just my opinion.

If the unit is sold out or the dealer did not put it on his spring order, it is common to charge freight, as this is an expense with costs him big $$$ to special order.

I have found Toro #38-1420 switches for $40.

Try putting 12VDC directly to the connector at the switch. If motor runs bad switch, motor doesn’t run bad wire or wires between switch and motor.

Have you looked at section 7 of the manual I attached? It does list two U-tube videos on troubleshooting the control module.

I own and service both Echo and Stihl and I only use Opti-2 in all my 2-cycle equipment. Never had a single problem and switched all my customers over to it. Definitely cheaper and easier to use than any of the ”brand“ name oils.
