Re: MTD Yardman Transaxle Rebuild

thanks, my plan is to have the front yard and riding ring done this summer, paint the exterior of the house in the fall, enjoy the new look in the spring........btw, I hate snow, never look forward to winter, but the wife loves it so here we are

REAL EASY way to fix someone's love for snow, .... After it snows a good bit, hand THEM the snow-shovel...!!!

Re: MTD Yardman Transaxle Rebuild

My grandfather worked in a blacksmith shop when he was a boy, and he used to tell me, when I was a little boy myself, how he had toughened himself up so he could stand the rigors of blacksmithing.
One story was how he had developed his arm and shoulders muscles. He said he would stand outside behind the house and, with a 5-pound potato sack in each hand, he would extend his arms straight out to his sides and hold them there as long as he could.
After awhile, he tried 10-pound potato sacks, then 50-pound potato sacks. Finally, he got to where he could lift a 100-pound potato sack in each hand and hold his arms straight out for more than a full minute!
Next, he started putting potatoes in the sacks.

Just some polish humor

Doc,

Referencing Photo #1, I have to ask. How far does your secondary power lines run? (Between the transformer and your house meter?) Do you have any voltage by the time it gets there?

And don't be telling us old farts how tired you are from trimming a couple little bushes!! Boo-Boo and me are up at the crack of dawn with the old ladies right behind us cracking the whips and a Honey-Do list a mile long in our hands! We gotta mow the lawns (acres and acres) trim all the edges, - - trim the hedges, wash all the outside windows, wash the cars (and wax them too of course), weed the gardens, prune the roses, power wash the siding on the house, feed the animals, (and whatever kids there happen to be hanging around), slop the hogs, milk the goats, put the cow out to pasture, shovel all the schitt out of the pig pens, water the dogs, change the cat box, get the damn chickens back into the hen yard, and then take the garbage out!! And then and ONLY then can we stop for breakfast!! I ain't even gonna tell ya what we have to do before lunch rolls around... But we work some hard, now I'll tell ya! Sometimes it gets t'be nine-o'clock 'fore my shirts dry enough t'go t'bed!

Latest Acquisition

I've been looking for a self powered lawn mower as pushing a regular mower up the hills we have around the house is getting to be a mite difficult on the old knees.. So #1 son says, "I got an old front-wheel-drive, Poulan Pro, with a 6.5 B&S kickin' 'round here somewhere, if you kin find it, you kin have it! Well, I found it today when we was over there weeding the garden.. Loaded her up brought her home.

Wasn't hardly any oil in it and I discovered why.. Getting to the drain plug required removing the mower blade, the belt cover under the motor, the belt cover on top of the mower deck and the belt itself. I drained her out, poured in a half quart on 10W30 checked the spark plug, sharpened the blade 'cause it was out anyway.. poured a little Sea Foam in the gas tank and topped that off, primed the B&S and by gorry she cranked right up!

What she needs is a little more weight up f'ward and a pair of all weather tires and she'd really be a go'er. But if you lift up on the handle it will climb a fairly steep incline. Plastic wheels just-a-spinnin'! Beats the hell outta havin' to push it up the hills!

Roger, you don't need to access the drain plug to drain oil from that engine.

1. Remove gas cap.
2. Put a layer of plastic (I like to use part of a Ziploc bag) over the filler neck and screw the gas cap on tightly. This forms a gasket to prevent the gas from coming out during the following steps.
3. Position a drain pan on the left side of the mower (viewed from behind, of course.)
4. Remove the oil dipstick.
5. Tip the mower over on its side so that the oil drains out the filler neck into the drain pan.

That's the procedure specified in my Toro's owners manual. Same engine, just has a Toro sticker on it.

DON'T take the air cleaner off, you'll have all sorts of trouble getting the engine to prime once you put it back on. Just remove the plastic engine cover (one screw on each side of the starter) and you can see all the springs from there.
