DON'T take the air cleaner off, you'll have all sorts of trouble getting the engine to prime once you put it back on. Just remove the plastic engine cover (one screw on each side of the starter) and you can see all the springs from there.

I gotta challenge ya on that Clyde, I used to have a High Wheel Murray similar to that Poulan , with a Briggs Eager 1 eng.
had the air cleaner off many times, and never had a hard start issue, it was one the best machines I ever had . Please explain your submission , ... :confused2: ..:confused3:

Well, make up your mind then! There is no such thing as a Briggs Eager 1, Eager 1 is Tecumseh. So which one is it?

Doc,

You gotta be kidding me, you can't have 1,200-feet of secondary between the transformer and the house, you wouldn't have 10 volts left by the time it got there. Anything with a motor wouldn't last a year. Every time something started up (like your refrigerator) every light in the house would dim down to about one-candle power.

They should have run primary for at least 1,000-feet and then mount the transformer and THEN run secondary wires (the three wires twisted together) from the transformer to the house. Even then 200-feet is a long run for secondary.

Roger, you don't need to access the drain plug to drain oil from that engine.

1. Remove gas cap.
2. Put a layer of plastic (I like to use part of a Ziploc bag) over the filler neck and screw the gas cap on tightly. This forms a gasket to prevent the gas from coming out during the following steps.
3. Position a drain pan on the left side of the mower (viewed from behind, of course.)
4. Remove the oil dipstick.
5. Tip the mower over on its side so that the oil drains out the filler neck into the drain pan.

That's the procedure specified in my Toro's owners manual. Same engine, just has a Toro sticker on it.

Clyde,

I actually thought about doing that, especially while I was trying to remove the drive belt. (Which was a bitch!) But by then I was too far into it and being a stubborn old fart I wasn't about to give up. Besides I wanted to see what condition everything was in and lubricate what movable parts I could.

Still, it sounds crazy, I was worried about just having the machine on it's side while I was working on it. I have seen some engines without a fuel shut-off, fill the whole crankcase with gasoline when left in a less than horizontal position. (Well, much less than horizontal, actually.)

Re: MTD Yardman Transaxle Rebuild

just about every house up here is like that, I have five telephone poles and they are about 200' apart give or take 10 feet, and at the last pole it is about 75 feet to the meter panel. My lights dont flicker and the only time they dim is if the a/c, the washer + dryer, and the oven are on at the same time. I do plan on putting in my own solar panel garden next year for ore power and freedom from the the grip of First Energy Electric corp.

BTW, not to freak anyone out, but even with 30 years experience with the chainsaws, and being Mr. Safety.....I still got hurt by my chainsaw. Got 8 stitches, 3 inside the wound and 5 outside.
It is not what you think though, I was very likely lucky in a way. The saw was running, but the blade was locked, I always lock the bar when I am walking with the saw.......I stepped back to clear a branch from my face and stepped in a depression which caused me to fall backward and I dropped the blade across my knee when I tried to stop the fall. If I was using my sthil 250 it would only be a bruise, but I was using my Promac 610 with the 24" bar, heavy little sucker.

of course now the mess in the front yard has to wait for a week because I need to wear this stupid brace or the stitches will pull out and the doctor will be mad at me.
