Re: Compressor repower

Just so you know. The feed wire never needs to be bigger than the largest wire in the motor.

Chuck-san,

That is not always true, because appliance manufacturers fall under a different section of the Code altogether... Sort of like the power company. Check out the size wire running across the street from the transformer feeding 4/0 cable for a 200-amp service on a building.. It's always like #2 or something.. The same applies inside a machine. I've never had to follow the rules they do, so I can't explain it, but I know they have different requirements. usually less stringent.

Re: Compressor repower

I plan on doing that. Thanky, sir.

Thought about both of those approaches...Tnx, Skipper
Also looking set screw lugs from McMaster. Wish they were right angle 'stead of in-line.
The trick is gonna be to see if the lug is narrow enough to fit into the terminal wells on the starter.......

Yup. Gonna do that. Rather painless....

I adjusted the pressure switch and ram 'er up to 160# this morn. Not a huccup!
I do need to rewire the pressure sw,tho. Wire too short and can't put cover on.
Probably use #12 or 14 romex fer that.
Gotta be neat!

Ron,

It's amazing what a man can accomplish with the assistance of half-a-dozen well intentioned friends, all of whom have a different opinion of how it should be done. I'd say the fact that you've got the A/C running is a credit to your determination and good mechanical ability.. If the thing will run reliably when protected by a 30-amp breaker, you've got it nailed... Good job..

You're right up on that schitt ain't ya? And here I thought you was jus' another pretty face.. Not bad for a 'spanner twister"..

I'm impressed..

I quit the electrical trade back in "93" went back into aircraft repair, ( I was "followin the dollar" back in those days ) ..you had to, .. because immigrants flooded in to work for peanuts back then, FLORIDA was a "magnet" for countries SOUTH of Key West, especially after the "Mariel-Boatlift" in 1980, I do manage to get through some of the cobwebs once in a great while, it shocks even me ....

Thanks, Skipper.
I have not done the 30A breaker yet, but will do.

My major difficulty is getting past my own thought process.........I always need to know WHY............
Many get frustrated attempting to assist me cuz I keep questioning EVERYTHING !!!

Maybe it's just......................procrastination. (Isn't that a Carly Simon song??)

Re: Compressor repower

You may de-rate the wire by using #10 pigtails and wire nutting the #8 to it. Or use Burndy split bolt connectors, or some other means of connecting the two together.. Maybe just snip a couple strands out of the #8 unless it's solid wire.

Sumpin loke this might work for #8...........

Depends on its fitment into the starter...........................

Ron, this is what electricians call a "bug" this is what the Cap'n is talkin about using to "splice" the # 10 wire to the # 8 wire, you loosen the nut, insert the wires together either going in the same direction (laid on top of each other) or come in from opposite directions, it is then wrapped with electrical tape to prevent shorting out .. (coming in from opposite directions, USUALLY results in a smaller finished splice)depending on local inspectors, some let you use just black plastic ELECTRICAL tape, THEN.. others want it first wrapped with Electrical FRICTION tape, then rewrapped by Electrical "Rubber" ( a tape that stretches like a rubber-band ) Then wrapped with a layer of regular electrical tape, S. Fla Building Code required the latter methond of splice on any wire splices inside a service panel or "gutter" and junction boxes using size 2/0 or larger, depending on city inspectors preference & codes also, especially useful in scenarios of meter rooms, cable vaults etc. the finished splice is then pushed, shoved, beaten or whatever it takes to keep it out of the way Ive used these in OLD cable vaults and the "bug" was as big as my fist, several wires in one bug ( located in a service gutter in condos meter rooms ) HEAVY-DUTY schitt ... BIG tools to tighten and boo-koo rolls of tapes
