Re: Compressor repower

Thanks, Skipper.
I have not done the 30A breaker yet, but will do.

My major difficulty is getting past my own thought process.........I always need to know WHY............
Many get frustrated attempting to assist me cuz I keep questioning EVERYTHING !!!

Maybe it's just......................procrastination. (Isn't that a Carly Simon song??)

Carly Simon: Yeah, it was procrastination, or masturbation, or something like that.

Re: Compressor repower

Ron, this is what electricians call a "bug" this is what the Cap'n is talkin about using to "splice" the # 10 wire to the # 8 wire, you loosen the nut, insert the wires together either going in the same direction (laid on top of each other) or come in from opposite directions, it is then wrapped with electrical tape to prevent shorting out .. (coming in from opposite directions, USUALLY results in a smaller finished splice)depending on local inspectors, some let you use just black plastic ELECTRICAL tape, THEN.. others want it first wrapped with Electrical FRICTION tape, then rewrapped by Electrical "Rubber" ( a tape that stretches like a rubber-band ) Then wrapped with a layer of regular electrical tape, S. Fla Building Code required the latter methond of splice on any wire splices inside a service panel or "gutter" and junction boxes using size 2/0 or larger, depending on city inspectors preference & codes also, especially useful in scenarios of meter rooms, cable vaults etc. the finished splice is then pushed, shoved, beaten or whatever it takes to keep it out of the way Ive used these in OLD cable vaults and the "bug" was as big as my fist, several wires in one bug ( located in a service gutter in condos meter rooms ) HEAVY-DUTY schitt ... BIG tools to tighten and boo-koo rolls of tapes

Holy crap Boo! Calm down! You've already impressed the schitt out of all of us.. Relax and enjoy the afterglow.. But "Bugs" - - bugs? Really?? I thought Florida lobsters (Goosters) were "bugs".. Lugs ain't bugs. Lugs is lugs and we can't cover all the things in life that are on occasion referred to as "Bugs".. You know what I mean???

Re: Compressor repower

Boo,

Well, I wasn't "shocked", but I was duly impressed!

Rog

Damn Goomba you forget more than I ever knew.. the most learning I ever had was the construction of the USA-TODAY printing facility in Miramar Fl, 2 yr. job,.. we were 1 of 3 elect. contractors on the job, the place had a separate BUILDING for the elect service to the main building, all the incoming service panels were in this building and everything was connected to the main building using Bus-Bar, EVERYTHING was huge ... had a separate room for Emergency Generators, separate room for A/C system power ( huge A/C chillers ) the press-installation crew were something to see .... they came in,.. in 6 Semi-trucks all matching uniforms, matching tool-boxes (like-new) they were a RIGID-arse team, each had a specific job and was a MASTER at it, sorta strict Military like, they were respected by EVERYONE on the job, total professionlism at it's finest, AND you did NOT mess with them or their "area" strictly forbidden !! 2 of us got "lit-up" one day with 440, working on overhead lighting in the "Paper Rolls ready-room", some a-hole flipped a wrong breaker while we 35 feet up on a cherry-picker hanging the 26 pound light fixtures, took 3 men on each fixture to mount those babies, good thing the "Panel guards-sman" was right there, he knocked off the breaker, N good thing we were safety-lined to the ceiling beams, that 440 schitt holds ya, and ya can't let go .. scary schitt !! musta been over 120 different panels and disconnects in that job each section, of each building, had its own "prints" and there were teams of USA-TODAY inspectors watching EVERYTHING !!as well as local county N city inspectors .. was a helluva an experience, single-phase, three phase 3 & 4 wire systems, DC control wiring, transformers, (which also had a separate room for the REALLY big stuff ) just overwhelming when ya step back a see just how much co-ordination and teamwork it takes to build something like this... was having lunch with a few of the "Elite press installers one day and told them how they impressed us, one of em said, this ain't schitt compared to what we worked on at the Missle-Launch Facility at Cape-Canaveral ( later Cape Kennedy) before we came to USA-T....

Well.............
Among my character flaws (and I have several,)the inability to "Leave Well Enough Alone" sometimes rears its head.(That flaw may be known by more a basic term..)
Besides,I couldn't get Boobot's eloquent arguments out of my head.
So,not being satisfied in the #10 wiring and needing to rewire the pressure switch,I stripped the wiring and starter from the compressor, replacing those components with the original ITE starter, #8 wire into and out of the starter, and #14 to the pressure switch. The ITE starter had wiring lugs that accommodated the #8 easily.
This allows me to safely keep my 40A breaker in the circuit.
All is well, and the compressor runs up to 160# without any difficulty. I may go to 175#. We'll see.

This was a promise which I made to the Firmament if Alabama won the SEC Championship............

Now I need a few 1/2" knockout plugs to keep the mud dobbers out.
That ain't being anal, just practical...........them suckers get into any and every unprotected hole.
I've even had stray pieces of tubing and hose plugged up, as well as the exhaust hole on a string trimmer (their version of the potato up the exhaust pipe,,,)

Tomorrow, I move on to fixing the gas oven (new igniter needed.)
