Thank you. Thankfully I got some business calls and haven't made it to the garage yet to destroy my starter!
Well I tried both of those tactics and nothing. Pretty convinced starter is bad now so I took it off and will take it to shop tomorrow to confirm and probably by new one.

I hope that's it!!!

Have you tried removing plug, then turn the engine over with key to see if it spins?

I have said this before. Starter needs amperage as well as voltage. You will get voltage with a bad cable, solenoid, or connection but not enough amperage to run the starter. Amp. are the amount of flow.

I did the jumper cable test and got nothing, I also tried tapping on the "bottom" and got nothing. I don't know if the starter was my original dragging problem, but now I get a good solid click from the solenoid and voltage to the starter but that's it. With plug out the same thing. Didn't take wire off starter to test voltage, but tested it while still attached to starter and had 12+ volts. Can't get at it right now as I had to clean up to get wife's truck in garage for the night. I hear what you said about having voltage and not amperage. Shouldn't we be able to count on new battery providing amperage or no?

Starter is off now and will take it to shop to confirm if it is any good and will buy new one if not tomorrow morning and put it on and pray all is good. Whew.

I really appreciate you guys helping through this and hope I can give good news tomorrow.

Yes I have and it didn't spin then either.

Now that you have the starter off. Hook jumper cables to it. Black to one of the bolt holes then tap red on the post.

Not if it can't if it can't make it to the starter. This is the very reason Carscw is trying to have you bypass everything with the jumper cables, he is giving you good information here. This will be your starter test.

Thank you sir.

I hate electrical stuff. Best tools I have found to use is a battery load tester and my volt meter.

Well folks, I got a late start today, but finally confirmed the starter was bad and bought a new one. It is turning over the mower, but the little gear does not always drop back down out of the way of the fly wheel and the mower still won't start. It is not dragging now, but turns good for a couple seconds and then stops. In my humble opinion, which really means nothing on these topics, I'm not getting the valves set properly. It didn't seem like rocket science when I watched a couple of you tube videos on how to do it, but I think that is my problem now since it ran a couple days ago when my battery started to dye and my starter started to die, or I killed it, and now those issues should be gone. When I was trying to solve the original problem, I learned that my valves may need adjusted so I did it. Again, I'm guessing that is my problem now.

Any thoughts for this dummy??

I do appreciate all the input you all have been offering.

Let me help you adjust valves the easy way.
Pull the spark plug take valve cover off. Turn flywheel counterclockwise until one valve is all the way open. ( rocker arm is pushing it in) then adjust other valve to specks. To the same for the other one.

Just got back from taking the wife to get a bite to eat. I don't know if I can wait until morning to try that! I better though, I'm tired. Thank you so much! That has to be all that's wrong now since it was running before my battery and starter puked. That's the only thing I could've screwed up! I hope.
