Someone explain to me why I need to have an emission inspection on a 2017 car? It is insane, the shop operator expected to be TIP'ed.. Got to Love it, Ray

It because the emissions police ( IE the government mafia) want money to give you permission to drive your vehicle. They probably will have some law requiring inspection of all electric vehicle too passed. Lately I surprised they don't charge an extra tax for using rump ribbon. I know they just up and doubled my property taxes by doubling my property appraised value.

It like my new health insurance calling and asking a bunch of stupid; just looking for reason to deny me coverage. Next time they call I going to answer "Brice's Mental Hospital, how may I direct your call?".

The share holders who acquire more money every hour than you make in a lifetime want you to buy a new car every 3 to 5 years
So they get in the ear of the EPA about old cars being a pollution hazard
Thus emission checking
Also a lot of Cat Converters fail so they can not burn the fuel your computer controlled fuel injected engine can not .

Sensors fail, causing higher emissions, making the EPA/CARB sad and it chokes the gophers.

WRT people expecting a tip FOR EVERY GD THING THEY USED TO DO AS PART OF THEIR JOB, I sometimes say "You want a tip? Never pet a burning dog" or "Buy low, sell high".

Asking them "Do you think you have exceeded my expectations?" usually takes the wind out of their sails.

3-5 years? Not for me- I maintain mine and drive much longer than that. I bought a 2005 Chevy Astro in 2011 with 78K miles and it now has a bit over 275K, runs great, rides amazingly well considering the terrible roads here and it isn't a rattle trap. It always passes emissions.

It's very easy to know if a car hasn't been maintained- the exhaust stinks of unburned gas and the plates are absent, expired or stolen or the stickers were stolen from someone else's plates. There's nothing that one or two sensors will do to cause such bad combustion but neglecting the other maintenance (air filter, oil changes, plugs/wires/cap & rotor) will and those will definitely kill the O2 sensors and catalytic converter.

For anyone with a newer vehicle- the Cat converter failed two weeks after I bought my van and after going to CarX, the manager came out and told me that these have a mandatory 8 year/80K mileage warranty. The Midas shop was just going to have me grab the handles & assume the position. The Chevy dealer less than 1/2 mile from my house did the repair under the warranty, even though I was a bit over the 80K.

Don't get me started on the absolute shit show when ohio had 3 counties fail air quality testing so the EPA mandated emissions testing. The company they contracted the testing out to was run by retarded monkees with their heads up the asses answering to even more retarded monkees in the government.

Drive a vehicle until the wheels fall off.
The individual shops are probably subsidized from local government for doing vehicle inspections. How could they turn a profit on a $12 inspection?

That's an insult to monkees.

Most of this began because California has so freaking many people. Many went there for the weather- I get that an have been there many times because I have relatives but the first time was in late 1966 and when we went to Griffith Observatory, the smog was terrible. Years later, Milwaukee did a good job of catching up and from a short distance, a brown cloud could be seen over all of the freeways and heavy-traffic surface streets in the area. With 275+ million cars regularly on the roads, the air wouldn't be breathable.

The tailpipe testing worked, if the ones sticking the tube in knew what they were doing. Using the OBD port works as long as codes stored haven't been purged over time.

If anyone is in or goes to the Milwaukee area, they'll see and breathe the stench from vehicles that are past needing to be tuned up or repaired for major problems and this would have been a good place for the nobks who came up with Cash for clunkers to see why that program wouldn't work- people who can't afford to do a tuneup won't be able to afford the additional costs of owning a new car, but the pie in the sky politicians always want to be seen as 'doing things'. Yeah, they do a lot of things, but they usually don't know what they're doing, as Ethanol shows. That crap needs to go away. It's fine in a fuel system that was designed to use it, but if not and especially if the tank is vented, it's a complete Corn Flake.
