    Info on stens shipping

After some research found this out. Stens has switched from UPS to FedEx. There are actually two different FedEx shippers. FedEx Ground and FedEx Express. Ground ships by trucks and can take a week or more from ship to delivery. Express uses planes and still does overnight ship to deliver. The...

Been swamped for weeks now. Worse than the last couple years and stens taking a week to get parts to me plus half their catalog backordered. Arrrrrrgh.

    Best laugh of the day

Rural King has oil on sale. Went to order 7 5qt jugs online. Cost of oil was $84 and they wanted $309 for FedEx Freight shipping. That was the only shipping option. I think I will pass.

    Stihl BR550. This a first

Fan was so tight on the crankshaft that the piston stop put a hole in the top of the piston. Took a 2ft long breaker bar and a lot of a$$ to break it loose.

    Got these in today

Guy dropped these off today. Neither has run for years. They are odd collectors items. He said there were very few of either of these made. He bought them sight unseen. I get to bring them back to life. Another adventure!

Just noticed this in carded NGK plugs

I just noticed on carded NGK plugs they have some brands crossed to their plug. My boxed ones don't have it. Funny the cross to Torch plugs. These came from Stens

    Saved another one

got a guy who likes to pick up things like this and then brings them to me to get them running. Thus is a mid 50's Tiger Tractor made in west Virginia. Couldn't save the carb so had to replace it and swap out the throttle shaft to make the AM carb work. Fixed the hydraulics. Put a kill switch on...

    Running a little hot

These 2 filters are the same. The one came off a kohler command 18 that had the entire intake screen completely plugged with dandelion seed. He mowed 2 acres of 10" tall grass and the mower started leaking oil out of the PTO seal. I have never seen an engine so hot that it cooked the label on...

This is what you get when a bunch of engineers get stoned and design a mower

Appears to be a cross between a Ventrac wannabe and a carnival bumper car.
  20. Hammermechanicman

    Another brilliant design!

Shock mount in front of spark plugs so that once you break the plugs loose you can't use a socket to get them all the way out. After 2 turns you can barely get the socket off and finger the plugs out. If they aren't tight. I'll bet the engineers used to work for Chrysler.

    The NEW Kohler

Brand new log splitter won't run. A guy's daughter bought it for him for his birthday and hauled it a hundred miles to him. The "Kohler" engine is a chonda clone. Pulled the carb and it is identical to a $15 Ebay carb down to the markings. Nothing against the clones as they run fine. I wonder...

    Starting fluid question

I have noticed that every time someone suggests using starting fluid as a troubleshooting tool people are quick to caution that they can "blow the head off" or "bend the connecting rod" or "bend the valves" or "blow it up". Over the last 50 years i have used starting fluid in literally many...

Why we ask for model numbers

Some people think that folks here are being jerks when they are continually asking for specifics about a piece of equipment after a poster looking for help says i have a XYZ brand (whatever is on the hood) model mower. Here are pics of 2 Troy-Bilt Tuffy garden tillers. Although similar there are...

Troy Bilt Tuffy was a tough one today

Customer brings in a troy bilt tuffy tiller with 4 hp Briggs. The usual, won't start and only runs on starter fluid. So i toss the carb in the ultrasonic and then installed new fuel pump diaphragm and tank gasket. Aaaaaaaand the same problem. Seems the fuel cup never filled. Changed the spring...

JD Z245. This is one season on these blades. Guy lives on a farm. I just finished scraping still wet grass from last season out od the deck. It was packed so bad the grass was down to the blades. Had to use a pry bar to get most of it out.

    Which head gasket?

Stens sells both of these head gaskets and they have the same dimensions. Looking for someone smarter than me. Shouldn't be that hard. Are they interchangeable? Does one supersede the other? Different year model engines? The 465-043 is like the old L head engine gaskets. Looks like it would be...

    Do grounds really matter?

Had a tough one in the shop this week. Mid '90s White/MTD rider. Blade electric clutch won't engage. Zip tie failed and headlight wiring fell against muffler and burned it up. Not the best Thanksgiving

Got up Thursday morning to a half inch of muddy water in the finished basement. The hole in the pipe from the well leaked enough water to come up under the window well and push about 50 gallons of muddy water through the window. Only down 4 1/2 feet. Luckily neighbor has a backhoe. Got if fixed...

    Never assume things troubleshooting

A guy calls me a couple days ago and asks if i can come look at his 1954 Ford 901 tractor. He had a tractor dealer send out a guy to do a full tuneup on the tractor. He said the guy has worked on it for 3 days trying to get the ignition to work. No spark after new plugs, wires, cap and rotor...
