    Can't figure out missfire

So.. I'm trying to figure out an issue on a twin cylinder 18hp tecumseh engine. When it's running it seems to run a bit rich and it pops and backfires a bit, mostly at idle speeds. But it will still do it at all speeds. If I take off the plug wire on the left head it almost makes no difference...

    Mantis tiller compression

I have a mantis tiller that is a bit hard to start and won't run at idle. I usually have to hold it around 1/4 throttle or more. I have put a new plug in as well as a new carb since it sat for several years. After checking compression it's making approximately 70-75psi pulling in over with the...

Exhaust popping through intake briggs 10hp

Well I took the engine apart as a leak down test showed the valves as being good. The exhaust valve cam lobe is pretty much worn down to nothing. I ordered a new cam and the gaskets needed to do the repair. No idea why it was opening a lot more on occasion but I suppose it was just me seeing...

Exhaust popping through intake briggs 10hp

This is the video of the valves, I'm gonna take the engine apart tonight and see what the cam looks like. https://youtube.com/shorts/OkH5l-maT_Y?feature=share

Exhaust popping through intake briggs 10hp

Yeah I can still see it do that, but it can take several revolutions sometimes before it will open more.

Exhaust popping through intake briggs 10hp

So.... I feel like a dope but I noticed something when I put the head back on and checked the rocker arms again. Sometimes I will get the full lift out of the exhaust valve, and other times, (most of the time now) it only opens a very little bit. I can't say I've seen that before but I'm...

Exhaust popping through intake briggs 10hp

Gotcha, so in the mean time I did yank the head off it and pull the valves out. As far as i can tell the guides are tight and the valves are sealing as they should. The seats are tight and clean and the valve faces look good. I might lap them anyway while its apart. The flywheel key is good. I...

Exhaust popping through intake briggs 10hp

Could a bad igntion coil cause this? I seem to be getting a pretty weak spark from it, sometimes sporadically it seems. It might just be I cant get a good ground on the plug too. Personally I think that's too easy. It sounds like a loud exhaust coming right through the carb when the throttle is...

Exhaust popping through intake briggs 10hp

I was wonderings about it being an ignition issue as well. However it does seem like a valve issue from the way it is popping back like that. I will probably end up pulling the head to see what's going on. For what it's worth too I probably remove the rope start assembly and hub so I can see if...

Exhaust popping through intake briggs 10hp

This is a link to it running, the throttle is close to wide open and the loud poping sound is coming from the carburetor intake. https://youtube.com/shorts/m3cqv_rbjWU?feature=share

Exhaust popping through intake briggs 10hp

I have a 10hp OHV briggs engine on a yard blower. It starts up fine and idles but it pops like crazy through the intake as soon as it goes up in rpm. If I take the air filter out it sounds like a 2 stroke engine without a muffler. The engine sounds like its struggling and it never really gains...

Need help IDing this Kohler engine/whats wrong with the charging system

Thanks for the help everyone, I figured I'd post the fix and unfortunately I made a stupid mistake and put the magnets on wrong. I ended up sourcing a used flywheel and that fixed the issue. But better to make sure of the problem than to throw parts at it. Charges great now though hah..

Need help IDing this Kohler engine/whats wrong with the charging system

So I suppose this is a two part question... My first question is, is there any way to ID this engine if the tags are all either torn, faded, or missing? Unfortunately the tags on the actual mower are also ruined or gone. I included a few pics of the engine, but it's a twin cylinder fuel injected...

Adding vacuum fuel pump to briggs engine

I was wonder how/if there is a way to add a vacuum style fuel pump to my briggs engine. It's an old 8hp made in 1986 on my snow blower. To make a long story short, once it gets a little below half a tank it starts to cut out and wont run. I have rebuilt the carb, (its spotless), cleaned and...

Push mower drive pulley speed change?

I have been cutting it for him but he likes to do it on it own and will usually try to mow it before I get home from work or when I'm not around. I thought about trying a personal pace mower but I haven't found one at a price point he likes, or someone willing to do a trade. I guess I'll keep my...

Push mower drive pulley speed change?

I was wondering if there is a different drive pulley that can be put on a walk behind mower to change the speed of it. Currently it is a bit fast for my elderly neighbor to use as they have trouble keeping up sometimes. I thought I saw something awhile back about being able to change the pulley...

Older Briggs Vanguard engine oil type

I recently had an older Massey Ferguson lawn tractor fall into my hands for free. It needs some TLC but nothing too major. I got it running well and fixed some electrical issues it was having. But more to the point.. I was wondering what type of oil would be best for this engine. I'll post all...

    Kohler SV600 carburator rebuild kit?

I feel a little stupid asking this question but does anyone know where I could find a carburetor repair kit for a Kohler SV600? I looked at a few sites online and they don't seem to list one. In the picture it says to see a note or something about repair kit parts but I can't find any notes...

    Honda clone engine parts

Thanks for your help everyone, I was able to find a piston/ring set. I'm gonna try to save the head, it's not as bad as I thought it was. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on removing the stator housing/assy from the generator. I got the end cap assembly off but I can't seem to get the...

    Honda clone engine parts

I have a Chicago Electric generator that needs a new cylinder head, and maybe a new piston and ring set. I know this is built off the honda engine design but I'm not sure exactly what model to look it up as. All the ID tags and numbers are long gone and there is nothing cast into the engine...

Briggs Backfiring! New Carb, and Cam done. Now what?

Any chance you have a vacuum leak? Try spraying some carb or brake cleaner around all your intake flanges and see if the rpms change or the engine acts different.

    Briggs opposed twin idle/starting issues

So, just an update... I checked the spark again on the plugs and noticed that the RH side was getting a minimal spark when it got hot. So when it was running I pulled the wire off the LH side and it would stall at idle. Pulling the RH side when running would cause it to keep running but almost...

Briggs Backfiring! New Carb, and Cam done. Now what?

Sounds like it could be a bad coil acting up, and when it warms up it gets worse. Usually coils will get worse when they warm up when they are starting to fail. It happened to a few engines I've worked on. See how the spark looks when it's cold, then check it when it gets hot and starts acting...

Yeah I did, it seems to have a decent blueish white spark even when it's hot.

    Briggs opposed twin idle/starting issues

So I currently have the displeasure of working on my neighbors riding lawn mower that has a Briggs and Stratton twin opposed cylinder engine. (42A707-2238-E1). The problem I'm having with it is it seems to start a bit hard, more so when the engine is hot. (Sometimes it will crank and crank but...

Toro single stage snowblower won't stop surging

So the first carburetor was an OEM one from Tecumseh. The second one that's adjustable is an aftermarket one, which could be why it still isn't right. But it does run fairly better with the adjustable one. So I did check for air leaks using some brake cleaner and an unlit propane mini torch but...

Toro single stage snowblower won't stop surging

I'm working on a Toro single stage snowblower with a Techuseh 5.5hp engine. (LH195SP). Its low hours but sat for awhile. The orginal carburetor was destroyed from sitting with bad fuel so I ordered a new one. It starts up fine but without a load on the engine it surges and pops a bit. If I...

    Oil light randomly flashing?

    Oil light randomly flashing?

So, I'm working on a Cub Cadet LTX2045 mower with a Kohler twin engine. (PS-SV715-3002). When it's running the red oil light will randomly flash on and off, sometimes for awhile, sometimes not at all. Oil level is good and the mower itself seems to run fine. I thought it might be an oil pressure...

    Defective ignition switch?

So just an update, I was able to finally fix the issue with this mower. It turned out to be an ignition switch issue. After putting the 4th switch in it, the problem went away and it has been working fine. The first brand I went with for the first two switches was Stens, then the last two I went...

    Defective ignition switch?

Yeah, I did jump the switches and the seat switch is just a two wire. I didn't find any relays anywhere. Just a 15amp fuse for the main power going to the switch which is good. (Red wire)

    Defective ignition switch?

I do get a ground in the off position with the wire pulled when I check it. It remains an open circuit in all key positions until I hold it in the crank position. If I back the key turn off maybe .20in the spark comes back and works fine. If I turn the key that .20in again when cranking it goes...

    Defective ignition switch?

So, as an update. I went through and verified all the pins were correct, (which they were). I went through each wire to make sure that nothing was shorted out, and made sure that all the safety switches were good, (they also were). I bought a new quality switch from a local suppler and installed...

    Defective ignition switch?

Thanks for your input everyone, I'll be going through doing some more testing in the next day or two now that I have more info. I'm fairly certain that it's a bad switch but I want to make sure before I throw parts at it. It sounds like since I'm getting a ground to the coil when it's in the...

    Defective ignition switch?

The part number listed seems to goto a 7 pin switch which is what was in it and what I got as a replacement. Might just be a generic picture on the site.

    Defective ignition switch?

Well, to try and make a long story a little shorter I have a Murray riding mower from 2003. It has a Briggs and Stratton engine on it. Water got into the original switch and caused it to lock up. I put a new ignition switch in it but I never got around to testing it because the battery was dead...

Wheel Horse Mower deck pulley stuck on blade shaft

So my neighbor has recruited me to replace the bearings on his mower deck for the blades. I have done this kind of work before but this one has be a bit stuck. I have taken the top pulley lock nut off and the small grease fitting that screws into the top of it. However this pulley is pretty...

Looking for discontinued part for old Echo chainsaw

Yeah thats what I was afraid of.. this is a pretty complex gasket which will probably be a bit hard to make. I don't know if I could use a silicone gasket/RTV because this gasket seals two sides of the crank case, and it also seals part of the fuel tank as well.

Looking for discontinued part for old Echo chainsaw

I was wondering if anyone on here would know of anyone or any place that has a lot of discontinued chain saw parts. In this case I'm looking for the gasket that would go between the two case halves. I need to rebuild this saw for someone as it's sentimental value to someone. I can get pretty...

    Honda GCV160 Model not found

This one didn't have any other markings on the engine, (or at least not that I could find). I was able to get the engine info from using the model number info on the mower body itself though.

    Honda GCV160 Model not found

I have a Honda GCV160 engine off a push mower that has a bent crank. To make a long story short someone hit a big rock while mowing, (not me) and the crank is bent pretty bad. When I try to lookup the parts for this engine using the engine numbers I can't seem to find anything for it. Maybe im...
