That doesn't ring a bell but the 1970s Lawn-Boy mowers are about as quiet as a gas mower gets. The muffler is huge and mounted under the deck.

#43

Everything is relative, $280.00 was a lot of money in those times. Minimum wage in the mid-sixties was $1.25 per hour.

#44

jmurray01

Everything is relative, $280.00 was a lot of money in those times. Minimum wage in the mid-sixties was $1.25 per hour.
Yeah I know, but I'm sure it was still cheaper than tractors these days...

#45

F

fastback

I think your still missing something. A mustang in 1965 cost $1950.00 or so, today that car is nearing $30,000 or more. Today, you can get a lawn tractor for $1,000.00, which I would think is cheap money. Now when you talk quality that's another thing. You pay big money for high quality today.

#46

K

KennyV

Another way to look at comparative values over time... (parity)
A barrel of crude oil all through the 50's and 60's was most always less than $2, generally $1.80 a Barre)l.

so that rider mower was selling for the equivalent of 155 times the price of A barrel of oil...
If you price a rider today at 155 times the price of a barrel it will be OVER $15,000.00 ... (crude price today is $97.96 a barrel)...

Mowers are 'cheaper' today ... by comparison. :smile:KennyV

Man that's cool. Built when tractors looked like tractors and not insects like all the garbage coming out of the big box stores now. That's a machine there. Thanks for posting that. I'm new to the forum but to tomorrow I'll try to figure out how to post pics of my old snappers. Maybe the old ads I have too.

#51

Snapperfreak

Snapperfreak

Now that I think about it, I guess quality can be found in modern tractors, it's just harder to come by. It's the design I don't care for. That cub cadet looks good. My dad had an old Montgomery ward tractor from about 1982 that I still had up until a few years ago. It wouldn't die and it looked good. Ok I know that sounds wierd but I like the old designs.

In a small lawn tractor like that, it doesn't really matter is if it is diesel or gasoline, so to be honest I'd rather have a gasoline engine for easier starting and quieter running...

In a small lawn tractor like that, it doesn't really matter is if it is diesel or gasoline, so to be honest I'd rather have a gasoline engine for easier starting and quieter running...

I have been using small & medium Diesel powered equipment for some time now...
They start Very easy, summer or winter... and actually operate Much Quieter than gasoline.. Diesel has a higher low rpm torque... you can operate at lower engine rpm & rely on gearing, gear box & belt pully, to bring the needed blade tip speed or attachment speed where it is needed...
Most gasoline engines will need the 3k rpm area to have the Hp & torque needed to operate....

Ease of starting & operating sound levels are Both pluses for smaller diesel engines, operating costs are also a plus...

Initial cost is the only deterrent but if you expand that over the service life... diesel power will be more attractive...

I'm sure some are better Or worse than others... but I am sold on Kubota diesels... :smile:KennyV

Obviously you don't have much experience with diesels.

I like the rumble of the diesel and the smell of the oil.

I'll admit, the only experience I have with diesels is in cars, where although they are very good engines, they are louder than gasoline engines due to their trademark clatter.

Don't get me wrong, I love that clatter, but many don't, and if they could have the hum of a gasoline instead, they would.

#99

F

My gasoline engines do not hum. Infact, my MF diesel is quieter than any of my gas tractors.

Ad from 1969 for Huffy Electromatic lawn tractor. But what I notice most is the kid with the Huffy bike in the background. I was 10 years old at the time and remember the radical bikes of the time of muscle cars and the space race. I put a lot of miles on one of those Huffy bikes that I had with features such as bananna seats, sissy bars, high rise handlebars, stick shifts, hi/low wheels and red wall, fat, slick back tires. They had names such as Cheater Slick, Dragster, Chopper etc. What a care free time it was when parents didn't worry where you were as long as you were back home in time for dinner.

Now I see where the off-set wheel design originated..
In so many ways, a better time...You will never see one of todays mowers being tauted for its light weight....and a man shown easily lifting one !
Is the origin of the ad known ??
Pop. Mechanics or Science ??

I believe that was the year 1953, out of Life magazine. I am looking for a sharper version than that one.

Adjusted for inflation, it would be $3572 today. Is it really cheaper ?

Actually homeowner mowers are a lot cheaper now adjusted for inflation. You can get a 12 HP lawn tractor for about a $1000 or so, the same as I paid for my 12HP 40" cut Craftsman lawn tractor new in 1986 over 25 years ago. That has always amazed me how lawnmowers have stayed the same price for so long. :confused2: Wish gas had.
NAFDA and cheap labor and materials I guess. Maybe also why so many brands have consolidated and been bought up. :2cents:

I always liked a little sex with my grass cutting.lol:cool: My altime favorite antique lawn mower was the snapper push mower, the deck actually looked like a turtle complete with head, found one thrown away in the woods when I was a kid, took it home cleaned it up and out, sharpened the blade great lawnmower, took it to work to mow grass and a guy gave me $ 50.00 for it now probably worth $5,000.00. WAY! WAY! WAY!
