I stopped at a fellows house yesterday to look at a couple of old Wheel Horse tractors. He had a small 19" 4HP Briggs engine riding mower. HE said it was a 1956 K-Mart riding mower. I have never heard of one, Is it possible he is right? I plan on going back to get a picture.
Thanks, JB4249

I didn't even know that K-Mart existed in 1956. So I looked up its history and it looked like it started in 1962. So you sure mush have a oldie. Has to be one of the first rider mowers because I don't remember riding mowers in the 50's. I would sure like to see some pictures.

I will get back out there and see if i can find a name on it and get a couple of pictures. Meanwhile here is a picture of an old Homelite. Not sure the year, around 1960. I was on vacation when I saw it and didn't have room to bring it home.

I need to correct you all... KMart was indeed established in 1962. You likely have a 1962 model as a result.

Down the road from me an old man who appeared to be in his 80's mowed his lawn with a small 3 wheel riding mower that looked like a child's toy tractor! Only had 1 wheel in front. It mowed rather well and the old man evidently had too much free time on his hands because let the grass grow 2" and he'd be out there flogging and flailing the grass as if a Kudzu vine had suddenly appeared. I think he either died or went to a nursing home as I did not see him out this summer. If that old mower is for sale I'd like to buy it. I've never seen anything like it.

I soon as I woud say there were no riding mowers or K-Mart in the 50's I would find I would be proven wrong. So I just say I don't remember and being a older person I get the right to forget things like that. What I do remember was some mowers that the attachments went on the front like a reel mower and the operator rode on a a sulky. There were more then one manufacturer that did this. as I remember they didn't cut the weeds very well
