Re: MTD Yardman Transaxle Rebuild

I don't have an anvil. If I did, I would trip on it and stub my toes. Therefore, it's best that I don't get one.:laughing:

Doc: Why are you inside thinking about anvils?? You could have had several of those McCulloch chainsaws fixed by now!

Re: MTD Yardman Transaxle Rebuild

And I'll bet there's a great number of people that DON'T know there IS a difference between a GARDEN tractor and
a LAWN tractor, I did'nt till I asked , and looked, the OBVIOUS thing was the size of the rear wheels and tires, then I learned
the Garden tractor usually was built a lil bit "BEEFIER" to take better abuse doing chores as well as mowing, ie. a stronger trans. larger engines, frame was stronger to be used for attachments, etc. in general, a stronger machine. A lot of
mowers use the descriptors in their series numbers, as LT5566 (lawn-tractor) or GT-5566 (garden-tractor) And that's
where a bunch of folks asking for help, think that series number is going to tell the tech's here, EVERYTHING we need to know to help them with their issues, OY-VAAAAYYYY . ..:confused2: ..:mur:

Of Anvils and other heavy stuff.....

Anvils: A number of years ago I was in need of a large gouge chisel as I was scooping out a half pine log to make an old fashioned 'dough bowl'. So I went to several auto shops in the area until I found a large brake drum from a big truck. I made a forge from that with three legs and used a short section of Rail Road track for an anvil. I heated up a section of lawn mower blade and proceeded to beat it into shape, then quenched it in an oil bath. After grinding and sharpening I wrapped the cutting edge in a wet towel and then welded the back end to a section of 3/4" black-iron pipe for a handle. It worked great! I have looked for a decent anvil ever since. Around here, if you can find a used one at a dollar a pound, you've got a good deal. However, finding one for sale is almost as rare as finding hens teeth! I still use my RR track. What I'd really like to find is one of those hand turned blowers for the forge. I used a hair dryer and it blew so much air that I had to set it three feet back from the air inlet pipe and just let it blow in the right general direction.

I found some pictures.

Roger

Progress towards the 50K/1K goal

Doc,

I have to thank you for the interest you have created in this thread! I do believe my recent estimate regarding the thread reaching 50,000 views and 1,000 posts has been knocked into a cocked hat! Posts are coming in so fast I can't adjust my computations quickly enough to keep up! I mean now I get up and I don't just have a few new posts to read, I have several new "PAGES" of posts to read!

Believe it or not, if you go back to the beginning and read everything, you'd find that we actually tried to shut the thread down several times, but each time it bounced back to life like the Energizer Bunny. Those of us who have been on here since the beginning - (when I was actually rebuilding the transaxle on my MTD Yardman) - had sort of run out of topics of interest and although it was obvious lots of people were reading the posts, getting any of them to contribute to the thread wasn't easy. Maybe they are all visitors and can't contribute, I don't know, but we needed an injection of new subjects and then YOU came along! If we could just involve a couple more members with interesting topics to share the MTD forum would become omnipotent! Unstoppable! A force to be reckoned with! We could dominate the Forum World!! GOLD STARS galore!! . . . . LOADED PIZZAS . . . . ROLEX SUBMARINERS!! .... We'll go done in history!! (Although I'm not sure as what!)

Keep on keeping on...

Rog

Re: MTD Yardman Transaxle Rebuild

When Tom comes back, we'll have even more to talk about.

I also have a question. Does anyone here have a trimmer with the MTD 31cc engine? If so, have you ever had it kick back and then start running backwards? It's very strange when you go to trim and the head is spinning in the wrong direction! :confused2:

well, all my saws are not meant to be fixed..LOL I buy the timberbears, the 605, 610 pretty much every 600 series chainsaw I see at yard sales and craigslist just to keep my love for the old powerhouses alive. I used to do alot of projects with pine and cherry logs years ago, in the process I smoked about 7 pro mac 610's , running the saws for hours at a time all weekend long. I now only have 5 that run, and of that 2 that run like the wind..LOL it's all I need.........besides the stitches in my left knee like to remind me they are there every chance they get......will be back to my outside hard working crazy *** self by next Sunday
