Hell yeah Trev,... you work on bikes all the time ..when I was a kid in school there was a guy named Creesy ..
had a "650" "trumpet" = (Triumph) was the fastest thing in the schoolyard ...then there were the very popular
"Rich-Kids" bike a "Beezer" = ( BSA) .... the Triumph "Tiger-Cub" was always the bike of choice ...if ya had the money..! In my Senior year the "Rice-Burners" hit the yard and being a Japanese product they were NOT liked
very well ..UNTIL they started cleaning everythings clock !!! Some of those bikes were screamers .!! especially
KOWEE =(Kawasaki) 2 cycles ...the H2 triple was the most feared to beat...

Boo,
The Kew triples were bad a** from the get go. Those 750/900s were serious street racers. I had a 1977 KZ 650 and actual beat a guy on a KZ900 in a race one day. I think he was having a bad day but the 650 was plain ol nasty. The rear wheel would break free at highway speeds if you dropped a gear and nailed it hard. I go more speeding tickets in the 6 months I owned it then I have had the rest of my life. Traded it in on my 1977 Harley.

Re: MTD Yardman Transaxle Rebuild

We were church mouse poor when I was young and film processing down here was real expensive so there are almost no photos other than weddings
I was 21 when I bought my first camera by which time I had been through a dozen or so girlfriends a similar number of used bikes ( barely running ) and was dating my now wife.
The bike photos are on the other computer so If I get excited I will drag a few across.
Very few of my bikes , cuse I knew what they looked like ( **** ).

As for tripples, had a H1 ( 3rd hand of course ) replaced the forks twice after slamming up the bum of the car in front after being caught unawares by the sudden power band and thus went back to 4 stoke twins & singles.
Been riding a 42 WD M20 for the past 25 years and before than a 67 WD B40 .
A man should know his limits & I was once termed the walking dead as my reflex times are soooo sloooooow.

As for fat people / kids a sign of the times.
I rode my pushbike 3 miles to school to save the 3p bus fares each way & I split that with mum so I made 15p a week riding the bike. And yes I fell off and grazed my knees more times that I can remember.
Primary school I walked as did just about every other kid, some near 2 miles and usually in groups so each mum escorted the kids from their place to the next pick up house.
This worked because most mothers were stay at home so they had the time to do it twice a day. AND BRING THEIR KIDS (us ) UP PROPERLY .
That can not happen today as most mums work full time because owning your house before you are 40 is the most important thing in the universe .
Second only to the overseas holidays, followed by your own swimming pool and a new car every 3 years.
If you don't send your kids to school wearing designer label cloths you are subjecting them to "trauma" ( who taught them that ? )
Thus these kids LEARN from age 5 that you get from A to B by being DRIVEN.

We all read social media so none of our kids can go to any organised kids group ( scouts ) because every adult in there is a pedophile and our kids will again be scarred for life ( crap ) from such traumatic exposures ( because we teach them to be traumatised )
So the kids don't walk anywhere
Kids don't ride bikes ( cause they might get hurt )
Kids don't take place in organized recreational activities
Kids don't want to play sport cause if the don't win they are not good enough ( where did they learn that from ? )
Kids don't have adventure playgrounds any more sauce some got hurt & then their parents sued the civic authorities so the play equipment got removed.
Kids can not kick or throw a ball in a public park cause it might hit another kid & their parent will sue you & the civic authority.
Down here , to save money we are going close density so new blocks are as small as 400 sq yds, usually with a 300+ sq yd house on it
Inner city small parks have all been built over in favour of large recreation parks , where kids have to be driven to cause they don't walk or ride bikes.

Then out of guilt we buy them computers , game boys etc etc to sit on their braodening backsides and amuse themselves.
Then we "wonder " why they are fat and this is before we take them to "treat" places like MacDonalds .

The State governments ( which we elected ) got caught out predicting where schools will be needed so came up with a brilliant plan to dump the local school for local kids philosophy.
Thus parents were "free" to pick which ever school they wanted their kids to attend.
This was a double bunger for the State government because not only did it "solve" the class size crisis but it effectivly knobbled the most powerful non politically aligned group in the nation, the local school P & C .
Now because your kids are going to a school anything up to 20 miles away from where they live, you never go to any P & C meeting. So you don't lobby the government for improvements to the local area because you don't live anywhere near there.
Your kids are now isolated in their own suburb because they don't know any of the local kids any more and are too far away from their school friends to hang with them after school so they "hang" on their phones with their school friends while sitting in their kitchens eating cookies / cake & drinking coke/ fruit juice when they should be burning up energy.

And it was us, you and me that caused all this to happen.
we voted in governements who lowered taxes by reducing services and selling off schools.
We hero worship people who "get way ahead" very early in life regardless of what devistation that have wrought becoming so wealthy.
We failed to bring any balance into the "Pedophile problem debate"
We taught our kids it was shameful to be abused by some one else
We sued every one and anyone shamefully using "damage" to our kids as the catalyst
We made laws and supported governments who made laws that made it criminal to allow our kids to be hurt or injured in any way shape or form.
If my parents wew alive in this time they would be both in gaol because of all the things I managed to do to myself.

So not it is not just a case of the weak & lazy stuffing their fat faces with **** fast food and energy dense drinks ( although it does make things worse )
There is no fruit juice or pop in my house, we don't buy it thus the grand kids can't drink / eat it.
They whinge , bitch & nag at us but we don't go the easy lazy way and give in, thus they drink water when here.
We don't drive them anywhere, we walk to the bus and a train so make a full day out of a simple outing.
Phones stay on the table and are only allowed to touch them after dark.
In summer we ride push bikes down to the local swimming hole, about a mile & 1/2 away, swim, play then ride back & shower.
They tell me that none of their friend ever ride on a road or ride to go anywhere.
A bike is something that mom puts on the top of the car then drives them to the park to ride on the bike paths, if and when she has the time to do it.
We are the favourite pair of grand parents

Well you have been complaining that I have not been pulling my weight on this thread so I just made it up with interest.

Not a subject for brevity.
We have just spent enough to buy 5 complete new ambulances retrofitting the few we have to take really fat people after a really fat man sued the Ambos because they turned up & he could not fit in the vehicle .
They then had to order the rescue van with heavier lift gear to get him inside.
This apparently caused him "Severe embarassment" which caused him to overeat even more and get fatter.
The delay in getting him to hospital also had an adverse affect on the treatment.
The tragic bit is he won the case and got a sizeable payout.

It is easy to stand back & say it's all your fault you fat lazy bastard but we ( our generation ) are the actual responsible party.
My grand kids refused to go to school because my daughter would not buy then the "in brand" of gym shoes.
They ended up wagging school for the whole day & forging absence letters rather than being heckled by their friends.
Now where did they learn those attitudes ?
From the TV adds we our generation bombard them with - the original & authentic !%@@* jeans, cola etc etc etc. We created these monsters.

Bert Man's tirade

Trev,

There is only one way that an entire global generation could become equally screwed up, from one side of the globe to the other! Social Media! We treat our grand children the same way as you have described, (we have five grand daughters between the two of us). They have to do as they are told - when they are told to, be polite at all times, pay attention to what's being said to them, eat what they are given, etc... And as you say, we too are the favored grand parents. Kids want someone to be in charge and we're glad to fill that niche.

What puzzles me the most is this: According to Boo, he didn't raise his kids the way kids are being raised today, I can assure you that I certainly didn't - (My daughter half-jokingly once told a friend, who had just put her child in "time-out", that MY version of "time-out" was the time she was in mid-air from getting her butt kicked for misbehaving. Not literally true, but it made a point.) - And I highly doubt that you raised your kids the way they are being raised today.. So what changed all our children into the most useless parents ever to produce kids? How can such dramatic social change come into vogue in such a short time? . . . Social Media! . . . I can think of no other means of changing the way children are raised in nearly every "progressive" nation on earth in one short generational period! It boggles the mind! Hopefully like all things, eventually the pendulum will swing back and sensibility will once again reign. Recently each generation has been "named" The Greatest generation, The Baby Boomers, Generation X and so forth, I think the current generation may have to be dubbed "The Useless Generation". It fits...

Drag your old tin types out of the closet and show us a couple bikes. And don't feel singled out for being poor, I think everyone back in the 40's and 50's was poor, just none of us knew it! I guess if you didn't have enough to eat, or a way to keep warm or a place to live, then you knew you were poor and if that's the criteria, then I wasn't poor.. But pretty much none of us had a pot to piss in.. we had a lot of fun though! Built forts out of scrap. Dug underground forts, walked for miles, rode second hand bicycles if we were lucky enough to have one, played in the woods all day, went sledding all winter, went fishing. Yeah, we had a great time, I wouldn't trade a minute of it... But, we had to work too! I think I've always had a job that earned money ever since I was about 12. I think that's why I like retirement so much today!!!

Lobstering

Tom,

I'm getting ready for you buddy! My neighbor and I launched his lobster boat yesterday and we set out all our traps. Just for the heck of it - (it's very early in the season for lobstering) - we decided to haul our traps early this morning to see if we'd get anything. We had set some of them around some shallow rocky ledges and then sprinkled the rest down in the harbor channel (that's "harbour" to you Trev - but in Maine is pronounced "harbah"). So we were testing waters from less than 20-feet to over 70-feet in depth. The deepest set traps did the best and we got 31 lobsters out of ten traps! However, only two of those lobsters were legal keepers.. (That's pronounced "keepahs" here in Maine.) Still we were impressed by the number of lobsters that have moved inshore already so early in the year. We'll be out again tomorrow morning by 6 AM, hopefully it won't be as foggy as it was this morning, we had to use good old dead reckoning to find the buoys down in the channel, it was so thick, but it scaled by 7 AM and the sun even came out for a while.. Then it started sprinkling again.

Anyway, I ought to have plenty of lobsters by the time you make it up here... Come hungry...

Re: MTD Yardman Transaxle Rebuild

Roger,

I have watched this You Tube series from the start to the finish a few weeks ago. Lou builds a "simple wooden skiff" that is a piece of art but still a work boat. Enjoy:

We ( me and who ever drags along with me) should be up your way mid June or so. I will call and give you updates so you can decide to lock up and run away or not. ;-)
