Re: ZERO POPULATION GROWTH or ZPG
No arguement about news Roger.
Except the changes you are seeing now, we have been getting for 200 years.
Many years ago I picked up a line from a junkie passenger I was taking to Kings Cross at 3 am on a rainy morning.
"Why sit at home and watch some one else's artificial life when you can live your own one for real ?"
Thus TV sits in the corner and gathers dust except for a few shows , like the Press Club dinners & the odd documentary.
I find it funny that we push our children to read above their level to increase their literacy skills yet are happy to watch TV programes all day written down to very low intellectual levels.
When was the last time you heard a word with more than 4 sylabiles on a TV show.
SWMBO did 4 exhibitions when she was with the museum that won awards world wide.
She got sacked because she refused to dumb down the literature to that of a 10 year old.
The museum has never staged another exhibition that won an award.
Luckily we have government media down here , like the BBC in the UK, so the radio is on all day in the workshop ( I have tinitus so quiet is a no no ).
Usually it is on the PNN ( Parliamentary News Network ) but even then, the reporting of debates, that I hear on the "news" is nothing like what was actually said in the debate.
As far as obsessive cleaning, it will kill you in the end.
Lack of proper science education in schools combined with scare advertising negates the fact that around 92% of all bacteria are beneficial.
And of course the real dangerous ones are immune to alcohol so like 95% fat free= 5% fat , kills 95% of bacteria = leaves the really nasty ones behind.
Perhaps we need to broadcast War of the Worlds every day to make it sink in. The churches would really like to see it on endless high rotation as ultimately God saves the world .
We actually passed laws banning butchers from using wooden chopping blocks because some idiot decided that plastic was cleaner than wood.
Hundreds of mass poisionings have been traced back to kitchens preparing food on plastic boards but the penny is yet to drop that wood, even old dead wood is naturally antibiotic ( which is why they used it for butchers blocks in the first place) .
Bert,
Phew!! Let's see now...... news, we agree... TV, we mostly agree, but I think I have more interesting shows to watch than you do... Political news (if you can call it that) - I have friends that spend their waking hours listening to politics and if you will forgive the observation, then tend to be wound up over things they have no control over (save their single vote) and I feel it isn't good for their health as they get to emotional, (a.k.a. angry!) You might find more relaxation by listening to music...
Dumbing down - That process seems to be universal. When I taught electronics in the Navy ('71-'74) we were ordered to rewrite the curriculum to shorten the course by "leaving out the difficult parts"! I have watched this same attitude being applied to all facets of life and education over the last half century or so.,, Sad!!
Church - Religion is experiencing a resurgence here, so I'm not going to comment, other than to say I suspect you and I agree on that issue.
Tinitus - Me too! Wearing my hearing aids seems to help, but I hardly ever do... I've had it so long that even though it is VERY loud, I hardly notice it. If I paid attention to it, I think I'd lose my mind...
Excessive cleaning and fear of "germs".. It's a phobia being spread by scare tactics and eventually we will have to pay the piper for it. When you have no natural immunity, you open yourself to all manner of diseases.
Wooden chopping blocks- Back in the '90's A Russian factory ship used to come to Maine waters to buy and process pogies, (an oily fish not used for table fare). I would go out in my boat and tie alongside one of our fishing boats that was being pumped out (of fish) and then climb up and aboard the Russian ship. It was like going back into the 1940's inside. The galley had a huge wooden butchers block mounted to the deck that must have been installed when the ship was built. The center was dished in by several inches from usage. None of those Russians looked sick to me!
