LT133 shifting hard (5spd)

Hi everybody,

Total newb here, looking for help. Thanks in advance.

My Dana/Spicer 4360 105 5spd is shifting stiff. It was shifting fine when I parked it last fall. Mowed for the first time a couple days ago, now it's super stiff putting in various gears. Disconnected linkage, linkage is fine. Before I pull the transaxle and pull the cases apart I thought I might get on here in case all of you have some sage advice. It's a sealed unit, but is it rebuildable? Again, thanks in advance.

The unit is rebuildable, but I would start by spraying some penetrating oil on the shift input shaft to the tranny, and move it back and forth to see if it frees up. Some of those trannys with the shift shaft on the top will collect moisture and rust.

Thanks, that makes sense, could very well be what's going on. I hit it with PB Blaster before I posted last night, I hope that's all it is. Will check to see if it loosened up. From my under standing, it's just grease in that unit, and not fluid of any kind?

JD do not recommend opening this box and they are a really good unit.
Jack up the back wheels and see if the operation is easier without wheels on the ground.
Try both engine running & engine off.
Should shift easier with engine running.
As previously posted most likely rust / rats / grime build up blocking the actions of the shift linkages.
Some times even the brake can rust up and that makes it hard to shift.

The only thing that could cause the box to deteriorate over winter is a blown seal allowing the oil to drain out and the box to rust but that is a real long shot and should be blinding obvious.

As IL said it is repairable, I've done it many times. If lubricating it does not solve your problem and you decide to rebuild it, these two sites may be of help.

I know that you have a Dana and the manual is for Peerless. They are so close to identical that once you identify which your's is similiar to, it will help you. Three things I would warn you about. One, internal parts are extremely sharp, be very careful when handling. Two, be very observant how you disassemble each piece, even flipping some parts 180 degrees over will affect the outcome. Three, instead of using grease on reassembly I always recommend and use Bentinite sold through a Tecumseh dealer.

Thanks for the help, guys. Shifting loosened up considerably by dousing the arm with PB Blaster. No rebuild necessary! It's weird to me that there's no fluid in that unit, just grease. I wonder if drilling, tapping, installing a plug and putting oil in it might be a good idea. Then again, if it ain't broke, don't fix it! Thanks again!

Not a good idea. These trannies were design to use grease, the seals will start leaking very soon if you try.

Best leave it alone. Some of those trannys use bentenite grease which is clay based, and it doesn't play well with needle type bearings.

Starts and runs good.

Drives about 20 feet then stops. Any idea what would cause this?
