John Deere 318 mower deck belt

Hi all:

One of my parishioner passed away and I inherited his early John Deere 318 garden tractor. They said it did not run but I took it away. I cleaned out the gas tank and installed a new gas line and it started right up. I ran a tank of sea foam through it and it now purs like a kitten. The belt on the mover 48" mower deck needs to be replaced. Which one am I looking for. The Internet say 114" but the implement dealer said 96 or 98. Which one is it.

I have a widow friend who has one of those big JD 318 mowers and it's giving her trouble. It'll start up and run fine for a few minutes, then quit like you turned the key off. You can crank it repeatedly and it won't fire even with the battery booster unit on it. I've tinkered around with it till I'm sick of it and told her I'd give it another go. I can't work on it with her boyfriend, who is a friend of mine as well, because he gets on my nerves with his bossy attitude. It's 'His Way' or the 'Highway' type mentality. An example: She ran over a rope the other week and got it tangled up in the blades and pulleys. Bound up the middle pulley entirely. When I finally got down there, he was taking the frame off the mower so he could see the pulleys better! I told him he didn't need to do that and he insisted we did. Finally I asked him to take the farm tractor wheel to the shop and get it repaired and I'd look at it while he was gone. 5 minutes later I had it fixed! Put a big wrench on the middle pulley nut and pulled it through and it finally broke free and spun along with the others. Anyway...I digressed..but I have no idea what size belt goes on it. I wonder if prayer could help a wayward John Deere 318 in East TN? I know cursing doesn't help it.

Not sure on the exact size, part # is M119685 ...........BELT - SECONDARY.

Go to your local John Deere Dealer and get the right belt. If they are a true John Deere dealer you will get the right belt without a guessing game. Belts are too pricey to get the wrong belt and yes you will pay more at the John Deere dealer but it is worth it.

Go to the dealer have them pull the belt. Get the size off it and go to napa and pay half price.

I can't speak for your JD dealer, but the one in my area has very knowledgable people and their pricing is very competitive on most everything.

I agree. Some other off brands might be the right length, but the belt will throw itself off rather quickly.

Natureboy is right on this. Buy from the dealer and get the right belt. Its worth the cost and be done with it.

This is true on some mowers
The junk Deere blade pulleys are the same pitch as other brands. Now on drive pulleys you really have to go with the brand belt
You can get a gates belt for half the price only because it does not say John Deere on it.
It is the exact same belt.

I have a account with NAPA and buy a lot of parts from them all the time. Your NAPA dealer must be a lot different from the one I buy from if you can buy a belt for half price. Like you said they are made by one company and I find the prices run close together. You buy your belts from where ever but for me I have the best luck buying mine from the dealer. Are we talking retail? or wholesale? I buy all my parts retail to get pass the sales tax.
