I don't know the belt he needs but I do know that on most mtds a deck Belt runs around $40 I get them for $17 and yes they do last as long.
I do understand why you get your belts at the dealer. And if I was working on mowers for a living or extra cash I would also get them from the dealer.

(( racing is the only sport that you need two balls ))

In NY state if you run a business you need a tax numbers and then you have to charge sales tax. Once you have a tax and business number you can buy wholesale. I don't want to run a business or get involved in taxes. So I buy my parts retail and pay the sales tax's. Now buying retail I find most of my parts the cost is close no matter where I buy them. Just my opinion seeing there isn't much different in cost I think you get better quality parts that fit better from the dealer so that is where I buy them. I would also think the average person on this forum would also have to buy retail unless they run a business.

Re: John Deere 318

I have a widow friend who has one of those big JD 318 mowers and it's giving her trouble. It'll start up and run fine for a few minutes, then quit like you turned the key off. You can crank it repeatedly and it won't fire even with the battery booster unit on it. I've tinkered around with it till I'm sick of it and told her I'd give it another go. I can't work on it with her boyfriend, who is a friend of mine as well, because he gets on my nerves with his bossy attitude. It's 'His Way' or the 'Highway' type mentality. An example: She ran over a rope the other week and got it tangled up in the blades and pulleys. Bound up the middle pulley entirely. When I finally got down there, he was taking the frame off the mower so he could see the pulleys better! I told him he didn't need to do that and he insisted we did. Finally I asked him to take the farm tractor wheel to the shop and get it repaired and I'd look at it while he was gone. 5 minutes later I had it fixed! Put a big wrench on the middle pulley nut and pulled it through and it finally broke free and spun along with the others. Anyway...I digressed..but I have no idea what size belt goes on it. I wonder if prayer could help a wayward John Deere 318 in East TN? I know cursing doesn't help it.

There is a hall effect trigger module under your engine flywheel is bad.... it needs to replaced, Very common on Onan Performer engnes....
