Help!

I have a Toro SS5000. I replaced the starter and the starter solenoid. My battery is good. Now, when I turn the key, the engine cranks but does not start. When I turn the key off, the engine keeps cranking. I'm very confused. Maybe bad ignition switch?

From your limited description I suspect that you wired the solenoid wrong. Please post the serial number so I can find a wiring diagram for you.

It is a Standard. Model SS613. I can't get it to come up on their website. It is the type that is not mounted on the starter itself, but bolted to the frame of the mower. From what I understand, it doesn't matter which way they are wired as it is basically just a switch.

Model and serial numbers are located on the ID tag mounted on the frame under the seat.

I can’t find a wiring diagram, but it is a simple setup. You should have a three post solenoid, two large terminals and one small one. One large terminal should have the battery + cable coming to it. Othe large terminal should have a battery cable connected to it going to the starter. Small terminal should have a small gauge wire attached, coming from the key switch. Large terminal, to which the battery is attached, should have a small gauge wire which goes to the key switch. Hopefully you did not switch the two small wires. The one attached To the battery terminal should go to the B terminal on the key switch. The other small wire should be attached to the S terminal on the key switch. If everything is attached where it should be, I would agree, time to check the key switch.

Thanks for the reply. The original solenoid was a four post, and was replaced with a four post and wired as the original. I guess I'll try the key switch next. My storage area is not very weather tight and it may just be very dirty and perhaps has some corrosion. I guess that's the next step. I'm not really very mechanically inclined, especially when it comes to electrical systems, but I'm learning as I go. Thanks again.

This is confusing to me, I’m a Toro guy so I did a little more digging, I found the service manual I knew was out there. It has a wiring diagram and very good explanation of how the system works and how to test each component. Hope this helps. https://www.toro.com/getpub/78978

I forgot to add that if you bought the solenoid off Fleabay or AutoScam, there is a good chance that it may be bad. That is the first component I would be checking.
