John Deere is just a name on a over priced mower.
In the $1500 to $3000 price range JD is at the bottom of the list.
Cub cadet is a whole lot better build and cutting mower for the same money.

In the $1500 to $ 3000 range
or to put it another way
1 week to 1 months wages price range.
Everything is temporarily diverted land fill

Carscw, I cannot really comment on reliability except my DYT 4000. But what do you think about the consumer reports just released that shows Cub Cadet most unreliable accross the major brands (except I think, snow thrower). I once filled in one of their questionnaires on a car and they only ask about the first 3 years ownership, if memory serves. BTW Hey crew, how 'bout someone help the newbies who want to know what toe is and how to measure it? ( yes, I know)

I just go by my own experiences.
900 hours on a $1500 cub cadet in one year.
It cut better then any other riding mower I have used. Never had to fix anything. Not even a drive belt.

I got in a jam one day. Kawasaki engine started smoking. Was cheaper for me to stop and buy a $1500 cub cadet rather then go home and swap mowers. Used it for 11 months put 900 hours on it. Sold it for $750
That was 2 years ago. Guy I sold it to has had no problems with it.

Toe in/out. Stand up and point your two big toes at each other toe in, now point them the out the other way toe out. Just take a tape measure and measure the front and back side of the front wheels and try to get them as close as possible. Its just a lawn mower so don't worry about a 1/4 inch one way or the other. Now if you really want to do some high speed riding you might get into the castor and camber also.

There is a drawing of "toe" in the Cub Cadet manual MechMark referenced still on another thread today, near the end of the manual.

Its a lawn mower going slow speed over grass 99% of the time. I really can't see where wheel alignment is any big thing. Yes I have seen some front tire wear if the toe in/our is very bad like a bent steering tie rod after many hours and years of use. Now I have seen some post on here that some people want to make their mower into high speed rides only. Now that is when you have to think more about front end work and alignments. I have gotten into more of this type of work with the sports style ATV's in my shop where the person dose a lot of road riding.
