Thanks Robert, doesn't sound like it would pose any sort of problem at all.

Since I haven't had experience with the HRX myself, I have to ask, is there a chance that some of the clippings get behind that door when you have the Bag/Mulch door set to anywhere in the middle?

As Robert said, YES some of the clippings can get behind the door. Even when it is in full mulch mode some clippings get past the door, but it doesn't affect anything. See this thread about it: http://www.lawnmowerforum.com/honda-forum/10870-honda-needs-seal-their-mulch-plug-better.html.
But sometimes when I am switching from mulching to bagging the Clip Director knob won't move all of the way into the bag position, so what I do it use my leaf blower to get the grass out from the crevices. But I also stick my hand in there to get some of the stubborn grass clumps out from behind the door (do this when the mower is OFF!).
So, to answer your question, yes it happens, but it does not affect anything and it just takes a second to clean.

I bought my new mower today. In the end I got a HRX217VKA at Home Depot. After much negotiating they let is go for $549. So I cheaped out a bit by not getting cruise or roto-stop. But I think I got a decent deal overall and I'm looking forward to giving it a first go sometime in the next two weeks when things should be warming up.

Thanks again for all the advice. I got this close to buying a HRR216VKA and only stepped up after I got them to drop the price on the HRX a bit for me.

Congrats on the purchase! I know you will be happy with it!

I lost my old mower late last year. So I had to get a new one for ordinary duty anyway. It's just that leaf pickup is the thing it needs to do really well for my use case.

Well here is a lawn I did that shows how good the cut is. You will be happy with this mower when it is just cutting grass, also!!

That does cut nice. I understand you was picking up leaves but when you make your turn to start your next pass try and go on the same tire tracks it will look better and will cut the yard in less passes.

Not trying to act like I know more than you just saying try it and see how it works for you

(( racing is the only sport that you need two balls ))

OK thanks for the tips. What I usually do is only overlap just maybe an inch (not as much as I did in the picture) but because I was vacuuming up the leaves I wanted to overlap a little more so that the leaves don't hit the front of the mower, get pushed outward, and end up not being vacuumed up by the mower. But thanks for the advice! See the following picture for how much I usually overlap:
