WELCOME TO LMF!
I will have to agree with Robert. Get the Honda HRX217HYA! When I bag leaves I always keep it on the full-open position. I have found that it might not chop up the leaves as well, but you can go faster. If you try to go fast when the opening is small you will miss some of the leaves. But I love the Blade-Brake Clutch. Awesome feature! Also, I love the NeXite deck. It is VERY durable, and the grass I mow doesn't even stick to it! Also, I love that there is no mulch plug, so you can switch from bagging to mulching without taking off the bag so you can remove the mulch plug. Talking about the bag, it is very easy to take off, empty, and put back on. Of course it fills up fairly quickly when you are bagging like 5 inch deep leaves, but when you are just bagging dry grass it will take FOREVER to fill up. But don't get me wrong, it also bags wet grass with ease! I would STRONGLY recommend purchasing a Honda HRX217HYA. It was the BEST mower choice I have ever made! I have a feeling it will last me a long time!
Good luck, and PLEASE tell us what you decide!

That is great information! This year the HRR is getting the Microcut blades and an on/off clip director. Having the Honda advertised "leaf shredder" option on the Versamow system is why I am considering the HYA to begin with. If mowing leaves on full open is more effective, I can save myself $200 and get the HRR216K9VLA. I know that one has electric start, but strangely the one without it doesn't cost less. And it's self-charging, so there's half the annoyance.
Since I haven't had experience with the HRX myself, I have to ask, is there a chance that some of the clippings get behind that door when you have the Bag/Mulch door set to anywhere in the middle?

I bought my new mower today. In the end I got a HRX217VKA at Home Depot. After much negotiating they let is go for $549. So I cheaped out a bit by not getting cruise or roto-stop. But I think I got a decent deal overall and I'm looking forward to giving it a first go sometime in the next two weeks when things should be warming up.
Thanks again for all the advice. I got this close to buying a HRR216VKA and only stepped up after I got them to drop the price on the HRX a bit for me.
I dont think your going to need it to pick up any leaves anytime soon here in michigan unless you live in a different michigan than I do:laughing:
I lost my old mower late last year. So I had to get a new one for ordinary duty anyway. It's just that leaf pickup is the thing it needs to do really well for my use case.
Well here is a lawn I did that shows how good the cut is. You will be happy with this mower when it is just cutting grass, also!!

That does cut nice. I understand you was picking up leaves but when you make your turn to start your next pass try and go on the same tire tracks it will look better and will cut the yard in less passes.
Not trying to act like I know more than you just saying try it and see how it works for you

OK thanks for the tips. What I usually do is only overlap just maybe an inch (not as much as I did in the picture) but because I was vacuuming up the leaves I wanted to overlap a little more so that the leaves don't hit the front of the mower, get pushed outward, and end up not being vacuumed up by the mower. But thanks for the advice! See the following picture for how much I usually overlap:

Now that looks nice.
Been thinking of getting a Honda but i love snappers. Not sure I will like this years model so thinking about toro or Honda.
Have you looked to see if you can get gator blades for your Honda ?

No I have not looked to see if I can, but I bet there are blades available for it. Just curious, what do you think you might not like about this year's Snapper models because my dealer sells Snapper and I was seriously looking at them before.
Went to my dealer and pushed one around for awhile and it just did not feel right. Maybe I am just upset that they started selling them at walmart.
I think snapper gives the best cut but I really have never used any other brand to compare it to.
I have a 94 model I like the cut so good I am on my 3rd engine on it

I have another update. I had not even unpacked my new mower when I started having buyer's remorse. So I put it back in the car, drove back and returned it. Then I spent another $100 to get the HRX217HYA. So now I have exactly the mower I wanted and I'm looking forwarded to the additional luxury of Rotostop when dumping leaves into bags.
