Happens all the time with old motorbikes that have a petcock that gets left on. Many naysayers claim that the float keeps the gas from flowing when off but you (and I) have found out otherwise. Unfortunately few mowers have a shutoff.

Seafoam in everything using pump gas. Saved me on many a Spring startup. Before that I always had a problem and I have many seasonal gas powered items to live with. Eight bucks a can is far less than rebuilding kits and time wasted.

I just researched that and if you originally have blade clutch and drive system then there are a couple Briggs with "stepped" output shafts for that particular use.

Bad (new) solenoid? I once had a starter gear jammed in the flywheel teeth and it reacted as you describe. The starter plunger would not retract so it took some coaxing to free it up then the system worked again. I have no idea why or how it happened.

The reason I mentioned the float before is because old motorcycle floats, appearing to be of similar material, are subject to leaks caused by ethanol laced gas. They sell "stay up floats" for the bikes. I suspect not for old mower engines.

What would the float needle seat material be? I got a rebuild kit and there is a flat needle but only soft spongy washer type things in there and I can't imagine that the seat is not hard.

I would never have thought the jet was in the drain nut. Seems the most problematic place to put a jet.

Does the float have an adjustable height setting like other carb'ed motors?

Having lived in a four season environment for 70 plus years, I have not seen weather affected seals and gaskets on our equipment vehicles. Also, searching of the affects of cold on rubber I see references that it expands, not contracts. I'd be skeptical that the weather snap caused the leak.

I can't seem to find specific information on an 8291 model mower. Is it a worthwhile mower or one that might be subject to more than usual problems? Metal carb? When were they made? Probable good condition worth?
