    Head gasket

Sorry you are having so much trouble with headgaskets. I guess I am lucky. I have 4 mowers now with over 2,500 hours on them collectively, B&C and Kohlar. And I have put at least 2,500 hours on others in the past (know on wood). I do not recall even replacing one headgasket. There could...

slt1554 backup light won't turn on

I have a 2005 SLT 1554 cadet, with a 27hp Kohlar, that I bought new. It has performed flawlessly for the most part. But, lately the safety back up light does not come on. Every time my wife puts it in reverse, the PTO kicks out. She pushes the PTO in, then turns it back on with the engine...

Cub cadet zT1 zero turn won’t Stay running..again Help

I had a Bad Boy that would blow fuses occasionally when pulling the right control arm backwards. There was a wire touching the frame that wore through, and it would short out. It took a while to find it.

What was wrong with this mower?

enjoyed the read. I have been fooling with lawn mowers, starting with push type reel mowers for 80 years. With help, I built one of the first twisted belt rotary power mowers in our small town, , using a Model N B&S, a wooden deck, and wooden plow handles. While using many mowers over the...

    Shredding belts after replacing spindles

Yikes. I have been lucky about that. A lot of people do have trouble. We have 800 hours on our '05 54" Cub Cadet, which still has the original belt on it. I noticed today, that it has a lot of cracks in it. I have always marveled, when you change blade height, how they last as long a they...

    Head gasket

Sure sounds like something is not true and straight. I have run over 20 B&S engines during the past 50 years, and have not blown one head gasket. I did on my Ford and Chevy engines, but never on a Kolar or Briggs. Something is unusual alright. Something didn't come out right on that engine...

    Murray drive forward / reverse

Hi Valen. Was reading about your problem with the Murry. I was impressed about some advice that Bert gave you. He must be about as knowledgeable as anyone I know. I was interested how he suggested you take a picture of the faded sticker and ways to study it. Good luck. Just thought I...

Toro ss4260 oil change - drain setup !

I know what you mean. I have used a plumbing pipe nipple extension and cap for the oil draining purpose. But, more recently, just suck the crankcase dry with a 3/8 copper tube and 12v vacuum pump. It does a good job - messy, but quick. My cub cadet 1554 27 hp Kohlar with 800 hours still...

    Zero turn choice

I have 500 hours on my 54" Husqvarna with 2200 hyrdos and no problems. I had a way to pump old fluid out, and put in Mobil 1 15-50 oil about 350 hours. They are smooth as new.

    New Drive Belt Burning Hot

I did a dumb thing by putting a rear wheel on backwards once, and the tire rubbed the frame. First thing I noticed was a smell, which was a drive belt overloaded. I see you have some good drawings to study. Good luck.

Help Needed - Zero Turn Radius

My Bad Boy ZTR acted something like this. The safety switch wire terminal, on the bottom of the control arm, would sometimes touch the frame, and it would die right there. It was different, in that it would blow a fuse. I replaced several fuses before I found it. But, it does sound similar...

Ariens Briggs & Stratton won't start.

I do like Richard, as far as the gas tank goes. I just start all 5 of my engines, ( mowers and MC) every time the temperature approaches 60 degrees during the winter. I let them run a few minutes, and most of the time, I turn the gas valve off and let them run the fuel out of the carb. I have...

Ariens Briggs & Stratton won't start.

Sorry to hear you have having problem with the BS. My 50 year old B&S quit, and it was just the spacing between the coil and flywheel. The spark was weak. I found there was nearly no gap. I loosened up the coil, slipped a business card in, to make about a .020" gap, tightened, and bingo -...

    23hp Briggs v-twin 625 hours... Rebuild?

I have kinda neglected that. It smelled a little hot the other day. I was working it real hard, but I'll bet that is why. I am taking the shroud off and blowing it out before I use it this afternoon. Thanks slomo.

Briggs Lawnmower difficult start when hot

Hey Kris, my old stovebolt 7hp B&S was acting up, seems like after it would get warmed up. It would belch, miss, and quit. I thought it was the fuel supply. Before I got into the carb., I found that the spark did not look strong, and the plug was carboned up. I checked the coil...

    23hp Briggs v-twin 625 hours... Rebuild?

I forgot to mention the Snapper Comet with a 7hp B&S that my dad bought in 1965. I actually mowed a steep ditch with it today. It has the independent rear wheel braking, which works great on slopes. It is pretty well retired now, but getting some heavy rigs stuck in 5' deep ditch along side...

    23hp Briggs v-twin 625 hours... Rebuild?

Been reading all the suggestions you have Ru. I have over 1,200 hours on my 2008 26 hp B&S, and still runs unbelievably well. I better not brag, but it has been mowing some very tough, tall grass lately, as it powers my 60" Bad Boy. I have always used Mobil 1 synthetic, never let it get...

Do suspension springs help a lot?

Well, these ZTRs are pretty wide, so I am not likely to turn one over. On much of an incline, mine just goes down with the slope. I use the tractor for ditches. If mine had a roll bar, I might put some kind of canopy cover on it to protect me from falling limbs off my woods area. We are...

Do suspension springs help a lot?

Now that sounds pretty good to me. I sure wouldn't be going that fast, well, unless I had a machine like that. We would all like to get it over with and find something we would rather do. I know I can sure take my sprung 4 wheeler and fly over rough ground. Of course that is completely...

Do suspension springs help a lot?

I have noticed the suspension springs on some more expensive ZTRs. I have owned 4 different cheaper brands without springs, and liked them. But, they are rough riding even with pillows and a suspension seat. Some of the ads point out that you can go faster with them. That sounds likely, but...

How long do mower blades last ?

That is some picture on your address. That must have been taken even before I made my first rotary mower in 1948. My dad and I built one, using a 1 1/2 Briggs off of a milking machine, plywood for the deck, had the blade and shaft built, used push mower wheels, plow handles, and a baby...

How long do mower blades last ?

Yeah, I don't let them get to looking too bad. I had the end a bush hog on a friends tractor, to fly off one time. I keep them sharp and balanced, and look for cracks. I just couldn't understand the former owner of the used Bad Boy letting his blades get so bad. Thanks slomo

How long do mower blades last ?

My wife mows the smooth grass with her mower, and I use the Bad Boy in the woods and rough stuff. Amazing how the blades take what they do. I have seldom bent one. I keep them sharp and balanced. Now I do have a little problem keeping the 30" blade straight on the 50 year old Snapper, ha...

my experience with bad boy mowers

Interesting read. I love my '08 Bad Boy with a 26 hp Briggs, and around 1200 hours on it. I put bigger tires on it, and it is doing great. This thing is built like a tank. I also really love the electric lift, while mowing around 80 trees, with some roots 3 or 4 inches high. I just use my...

How long do mower blades last ?

I bought a 10 year old Bad-Boy 60" that had a transaxle concern. The original owner maintained 7 acres with it all that time. Found out that the blades were COMPLETELY worn out, almost to a point on each end, thin and cracked. The fan blades were broken on one tranny, and guess it over...

engine has muffled sound at times

Thanks slomo, I will check on the intake leak first. Doesn't do to brag. I was just telling a friend how proud I was of this engine - 500 hours without even a hic-up, ha. Sounds like the intake will be good to check first. Thanks.

engine has muffled sound at times

26 hp B&S has 500 hours on it, and runs great. A few times lately however, it has kind of a muffled sound, and decrease in power. It did that yesterday a couple of times, and then, just ran great, and normal, the rest of the day. Does this sound like it was a little obstruction of fuel flow...

Ball bearing fell from carb? or what ??

While taking the air filter off of my 27hp Kolar Command, this ball bearing ( looks like ), fell to the floor. I don't see anywhere else it could have come from except the carb or filter. I don't see anything like a check valve, where it could have come from. This engine is 16 years old, with...

    Opinion

Hi slomo - I have had a couple of cheap carbs also. But, I lucked out on a chinese carb for my 10 year old 26hp Briggs. The fuel shut off valve quit on the original, so I just replaced the whole carb. I guess I am lucky, because it is running as good as ever. Thanks. Enjoy everybody's input.

    blowing fuses

Sorry I hadn't noticed your response earlier bert. It was the bi-pass connectors hitting the linkage when pulling back on them. It had finally worn through the cover on the bottom of the connector. You couldn't see the wear when looking down on them. I bi-passed them, and it works fine now...

Bad boy wants to stall out when in drive

The bi-pass connections on my control rods were shorting against the linkage when I would pull back on them. It took a long time to find this. The plastic cover, on the connector had finally worn through on the bottom, where you couldn't easily see it.

Bypass All (or some) safety Switches

My ZT 60 blew fuses quite often when I would pull the control levers backwards. I finally saw that the bi-pass connectors were shorting against the control rods. I just by bi-passed them, and works fine. I may move location and hook them up again. But, with just me using it, I am always in a...

    ZT 2200 transaxle binding up

Bought this 54" Husky new, and been really satisfied. But now, at 480 hours, I smelled rubber from the belt slipping on the right tranny. I managed to get it in the shop with it screeching. I jacked it up, and with brake off the left wheel will move slightly, but the right one did not budge...

Changing pull start to electric start question about charging battery

Hi rkf-bomb. I have an old, old snapper that came with pull start. We put an electric start Briggs on it 30 years ago. I use a regular lawn battery on it, and just put the clips on it, using the cheap Harbor Freight float charger on the battery when I am done for the day. It keeps the...

    blowing fuses

Would appreciate advice about my ZT 60" Bad Boy blowing fuses. It sure seems like when I pull back on the right control lever, is when it happens. I have studied the wiring harness, and anything else visible, but, even after replacing many fuses, it still does it. Runs great, until I pull...
