It goes somewhere on the forward reverse shifter lever between the legs and underneath the cover. Someone sending me a picture would really help!!!

The parts breakout on various repair parts pictures does not show it. Model is TMO-3200003.IMG_3393.jpeg

Thank You in advance!

Look for holes in the frame and scratch/wear marks where a spring would ride.

That’s a good idea and I looked. I didn’t see any scratch marks. There are two holes. one hole has a spring in it. The other is empty. A picture would be VERY helpful.

Many times I was able to figure out how things go back together using wear marks. Nowadays I take a picture before disassembly, but this retainer came off unexpectedly.

someone had something similar to that the other day. On theirs it was a belt guard I think.

The hooked end goes over the F-N-R lever just below the guard
The you have to compress it to get the other end into a hole in the side of the frame near the tranny so that the spring pushes the lever out wards

Bertsmobile, I understand the concept, but I don’t see where it would fit. Is the guard the cover plate with the engine kill switch if not in neutral and with slots for the FNR shift lever?

Attached is a picture which shows the lever, 4 holes on one side, another large hole, and then a hole on the lip near the spring hole. Does the open end of the retainer compress into one of these holes?

At the bottom of your second picture is that bracket with the upraised tab. The hook on the end of the spring connects to the shifter rod, the bend part of the spring slides under the upraised tab, and the 90 degree U connects to a hole/slot in the bracket. Maybe even in the same slot the the shift rod is in

Ilengine and others. Thank you, I am close.
I did not find a hole in the bracket. Better pictures attached.

I tried the retainer two ways. One below the rod slot, and one above. The one below seems to work best, but awfully close to the pulley. See attached pictures.

Where did I go wrong?

That was helpful. Here is my final picture showing the spring retainer installed. I can see a wear pattern that seems to match. Sing out again if this is wrong, but the shifter shifts nicely and seems to be secure in this configuration.

Thank you all!
