Discolored but as long as it isn't warped or leaking and has gas inside you are good to go and just use it.

I did.............

In my experience if a Briggs float is discolored that much it usually needs replacing. It can't hurt to replace it while you've got the carb apart.

It would be nice if it came with the re-build kit!

New float comes with the float repair kit which includes a new float, new needle valve, and bowl gasket.

I have a float on order. I don't think it is the problem as I don't have good fuel flow. The fuel filter will not fill up! I have the tank with gas,
the shutoff "ON" and the fuel filter will not fill up! After some time(hours) it will have a small amount of gas in it. If I start it up with gas visible
in filter, it will start and run until it runs dry! (?) A minute or two. I will replace the fuel filter AGAIN and see what happens.

make sure something isn't blocking the fuel line between the carb and the tank. remove line from carb, and put below level of fuel in tank. Make sure the fuel runs with a full line diameter. If flow is slow or partial flow, you will need to clear the fuel line and fuel outlet on the tank I will sometimes put a blow gun in the end of the hose and then blow air back into the tank. And then see what comes out.

If you fit a new filter cut the old one in half.
You will see that the discharge tube is only about a 1/4" from the inlet so if it is fitted outlet up you get an air pocket that is trapped in the filter.
A common misconseption that the entire filter needs to be full of fuel for the engine to run.

I use the WalMart universal fuel filters in bubble pak, slightly bigger that the gen-ooo-ine Briggs. The gas filter is never full when running.

I removed the fuel line @ the carb. and use manual air pressure to blow back to the tank with the shutoff valve open and it made good bubbles.
I also put on a new Kohler 25 050 22-s fuel filter. The filter did start to fill up. I turned off the valve and I will see what happens tomorrow.
The tank did not have any thing I could see. I removed the tank earlier and cleaned out some of the old gas cap that had come apart. I replaced the
hose, re-installed the tank and added a new cap. The only thing left is the shutoff valve itself. Now a new filter, next a new float.
and on, and on and on........

MY JD fired right up today. The fuel filter was half full and stayed that way.
I rode around for 15min. with no problem. Misses now and then, new plug maybe.
The RPM's are very high compared to what it was before the re-build!
I will hookup my Gage and see what it is.

If you want it to fill completly remve it from the carb and hold the filter outlet down with your finger blocking off the line.
Eventually the bubbles will travel back up the fuel line & out the fuel tank.
