Some lco's have switched to the Kohler Confidant series with good results. They are not a top grade engine but run about $1000 and come with a 2 year warranty. For a homeowner it is a reasonable option.

Re: the kawi engine. They are known for blowing seals and then overheating causing lots of problems with the heads and other things. It might be worth repairing and then again it might not.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Here is the finished version with the 22hp Briggs installed. I had to drill out the engine mounts, make an exhaust manifold, move the battery holder and solenoid (thus new cables too). Other than that it was pretty easy. I like the machine with 5 more HP and a now cheap replacement engine! I also got rid of the safety handles as they were hurting my hands and added a tether switch from a jet ski. It runs awesome now! I love it!
