If you're looking at a 4-stroke, don't forget that it takes about 1 and a half times the displacement to make the same HP as a 2-stroke, which fires twice as often.
If I'm buying a chainsaw - Sthil
But a trimmer - Echo!!

Troy Bilt is a popular brand in the South. I recently purchased a Troy Bilt trimmer with a 4 cycle engine. No more mixing oil and gas. The trimmer is a little heavier, but works great. Easy start and idles smooth.

I had one of those Troy 4 cyc trimmers. Too heavy. Didn't have anymore power than the 10yo 2 cyc troy that I have had for 8 years. Still like my huskv trimmer. Lightweight, enough power. balanced and it feels good in your hands. Just hard to work on.

Here in the "north", I don't see many Troy-Bilt trimmers. Also Redmax, I don't see many of them. Here it is primarily Echo, Stihl, and Husqvarna.

At work most of my stihl equipment only lasts 2 years where I keep pulling old beat up eccos out the shop and they don't seem to die. Chopped one edger in half and put a hedge trimmer head on it and it's my favorite set. Don't know about the newer Ecco though most I use are about 10 years old

I purchased a Troy-Bilt 4-Cycle(built by Ryobi/MTD) 3 years ago to replace an 8-year-old Ryobi 2-Cycle which I gave to my son. This past spring the shaft drive sheared off at the head and made me wish I had kept the Ryobi and gave my son the Troy-Bilt. I consider both of these machines to be "residential" trimmers and the Troy-Bilt(obviously) not as good of quality components as the Ryobi. I would not recommend the Troy-Bilt based upon my experience but have owned two Ryobi's over the last 15 years and would recommend them if a "residential" trimmer is what you are after. Neither would most likely hold up if used commercially.
