Toro Timecutter Z480 (74353) Engine Blown - Options?

Hi folks!

So long story short, I blew the engine in my Z480. Oil was way low and stupid me had not checked it in a while, just froze right up.

So in looking around I don't see where you can just go buy another engine to replace it, the local dealer said they don't make that one anymore and suggested a short block.

Even though they don't make that specific engine anymore its hard to imagine there isn't some other one I can put in there, but honestly im not too familiar with how engines are made, which is making this difficult. Moreover, since I am not that familiar with engines I don't have many resources to pull from to help me find a replacement or alternative.

Is it even worth replacing? Just sell the entire mower like it is and get a new one?

I was hoping someone could steer me in the right direction.

Here are details..

TimeCutter Z480 Zeroturn Riding Mower
Model #: 74353
Serial #: 260000001 - 260999999
Year:2006

Engine: Briggs and Stratton 31H777-0168-E1

Thanks for any help! Much appreciated!

I have the same mower.
You can really just pick any engine you want.

I went with a 20hp kohler.

You can go with a new briggs and everything will plug right up.

Bertsmobile1,

Thanks so much for your valuable information. I have like 20 tabs open right now doing my research. Hopefully I will begin to understand soon. I found the briggs serial number decoder, now time to decode.

I wish it was that easy, picking up any engine I want... Once I get to these engine sites and start my way through the menus and such, i get real confused.

Where did you get your engine from? If you have a free moment, can you send me a link to an example of your engine.

Thanks so much!

You say you can get a short block. What's wrong with doing that?

You say you can get a short block. What's wrong with doing that?

The main reason is that I am not very experienced with engines, at least as far as replacing.

It seems to me if you just bought an engine replacement, you can use most of the stuff that is already on the mower already, gas tank and such.

Short block seems to be a bit more complicated esp when it comes to having to set up the timing and all, which I have no clue what to do. At the same time I don't really want to pay someone to do it.

Just looking for the lesser of the two evils.

I just took a engine off a mower that had a bad transaxle.

I would not spend a grand on a engine for this mower.
You can not sell the whole mower running for a grand.

Take the easy way out.
Go down the list of engines and find the next size bigger than yours that is on special and order it.
Stay with the same brand and you have a 99.9% chance every thing will line up.
When you decide which motor you are thinking of fitting, pop a link to them on here and ask if they will go in.

Repower have a web site that you just type in your old engine model and it will pop up a short list ( of the most expensive ) engines thay have in stock that are a direct replacement.
