Re: Compressor repower

The critter had one of these thingys on it http://phase-a-matic.com/StaticDescription.htm

Hopefully it will be that easy.
The starter has provisions for 3 wires...do I just use 2 terminals, or do I wire the ground wire thru the starter?
I'm still fuzzy on where the pressure switch gets inserted into the wiring....
Looks like this is the ticket:
View attachment 41679

Although, I am not clear on what the "M" on the circle is in the pressure switch circuit.
It appears to me that when the pressure switch closes, L1 and L3 would be shorted together?
I don't think that will work. What am I not seeing?
Any help??

ed. I found a video that even shows the chink starter which I purchased:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kb9pYlgL4Ls

Going to be a 40A circuit;gonna use 8ga copper....

A query: I recently ran more amps (and wiring) to the previous system. If I had reversed the 2 hot legs at the breaker, would that
have reversed the direction of rotation?
I am not sure that my compressor was rotating correctly............
What I thought I remembered was not how it should have been.

Ron,

Holy Moly lots of questions...

Let's see,

#8 wire is just right for 40A although that may be more than the A/C requires, which is not a real problem. You only need two-wire with a ground. The hot wires (black in the diagram) got to L1 and L3 the bare ground wire is just attached to the green wherever the provision for that connection is.

"M" is part of the Heater/Over-Current protection circuit, that will not short L1 and L3 together (although it looks that way in the diagram) it actually opens both legs shutting down the machine. There is probably some means of mechanical reset once the heaters have cooled off. (They detect over current conditions by heat.)

Yes!! Switching legs in a three-phase circuit will cause reversed rotation. Always be sure to check any 3 ph motor for proper rotation when it is connected up.

Did you notice that your electronic phase converter only provided 2/3 of the HP rating of your A/C motor? (And that's assuming it is a wye wound motor. If it's a foreign motor it might be delta wound and would then only provide 1/2 the HP!)

If you could find an old 3 ph motor to create your third leg, I don't think that would impose the same power reduction, but I'm honestly not sure. I never had anyone complain on any 3 phase set-ups I was ever involved with.

Good luck,

Roger

Well Goomba we had icicles hangin off our ears this mornin, 36deg and windy as hell, too friggen cold for me !! ..

Hang in there boo, I'm sure warmer weather will soon come your way..

I guess Ron could be your Goomba too if you wanted, I wouldn't get jealous or anything..

By the by, my knee surgery went well yesterday, now I just have to do my P/T and see how it comes out over time.. I'm still hoping for a better result with this one.

Thanks, Skipper.
I had read that the converter thingy reduced the HP by 1/3......

But, now I am confused a bit.
I may have switched legs at the breaker, at that point just single phase.
Dunno how that plays with the converter thingy.....
I just hope I didn't have the pump running backwards...unsure if that would cause any harm or not.
Now, as to wire/breaker size.

I have read on a few charts that I should have a 69A breaker for a 5HP 1 phase motor, but wire can be as small as 10GA.
WTF ??

http://www.industrialaircompressors...CTRIAL-Specifications-for-Air-Compressors.pdf

http://www.eatoncompressor.com/mymanuals/Amp draws - 1.03.14.pdf

I thought putting too small a wire for the breaker was a definite NO-NO !
And, as the motor should only draw 20-22 amps, why 60A breaker??
I just rewired the sub panel with 8ga/40A beraker form the main panel.........I don't wanna do that again .........

As with all this stuff at this point in my existence, I get consumed by questions that I can't seem to get answers to....
There is so much conflicting info on the www..........

Re: MTD Yardman Transaxle Rebuild

Tnx, Boobot.
I had already found a vid which showed connecting to the very contactor which I purchased!

How 'bout them apples!!

Old Electricians saying : ... 2 wires, hook it up, .. 3 wires, screw it up, .. 4 wires, blow it up..... :confused2:

AND : How do I know if this switch, is the right switch, if I don't know, which switch, is which .. ??
