Garage Door

Ron,

It sounds like good-old tried and true, "Trial and Error" has come through for you, or is at least showing you the way to 'garage door happiness'. I will be interested in hearing how things go in the end..

Perhaps you'll write a book afterwards: "The Zen of Garage Door Repair" . . . . . Bet it would be on the NY Best Seller List for weeks!

Good luck!

Back in my youth, I enjoyed building model cars. There was a technique known as "kit bashing" in which parts from different car kits
were adapted to make your car custom.
I was never any good at it............

This is more like "garage door bashing" or otherwise known as "I'll make it fit"
I'm gonna pick up some spruce today to make a full size panel.
Poplar would be better, but more expensive and farther away..........
Maybe for my wife's door....

Then comes the opener and non-present wiring........
Actually there is sensor wiring---for a single 24' door, which was WAY too expensive to contemplate.
The 2 x 9 footers will work fine.

This all started when we stopped by a new neighbor's garage sale.
I said that I could use the doors................

Okay so let's throw a little monkey wrench into your garage door. Why not put 2.25 in of spacers in between each panel? Attached half of that to top and bottom of each panel? So when you are done each panel will just look bigger. I hope this makes sense. I am on my phone so I don't have a nice keyboard to type on.

I gave that some thought,Chuck.
That would be rather tedious as the door panels fir together in sort of a tongue and groove config that would have to be machined
into the top and bottom of each filler. I'd wind up making 6 fillers for the combined 2 doors.
The method I'm using only requires 1 groove in the bottom of the panel.
Hinge attachment would almost completely be on the filler as well. It the filler would need to be securely fastened to one panel or the other.

Your method would promote symmetry,tho.
Actually still an option if I don't like the way I am currently doing it.

I don't mean to be a jerk, but I don't think that's going to look right and will have the half-assed look. How about just attaching a board with some decorative elements perpendicular to the upper casing (I think that's the right term) so that the door slips in behind it. You could affix a weather strip to it to seal against the door. By decorative elements I mean some moldings in a rectangular pattern to give an inlaid panel look, similar to the doors. You could even install some small windows.

Any and all suggestions are welcome here............
What would be the difference if the decorative panel was affixed to the door frame or the door itself??
My panel will have such elements in keeping with the existing panels.
I could actually put a piece of hardi-plank siding across there and it would blend with the pillars on either side....

And, as there are 2 doors side by side, wouldn't 2 half assed solutions comprise one whole arse??

I have actually considered installing the short panel under the 1st panel from the top and including some plexi windows...

I do not consider you a jerk, Darryl. Now, your brother Darryl, on the other hand...................
