Re: MTD Yardman Transaxle Rebuild

The service station (they actually pump gas for customers) looked it up and the spec is K-1, which is the correct type. Heater manufacturers specify water-clear K-1 (or 1-K) which is typically available at hardware stores or Lowe's, HD, etc. I have used in my Dyna Glo and it works, but a bit fumy til the heater reaches operating temp. I set it outside til it gets to temp.
The knock against the red dyed stuff is that is supposedly not as pure as the crystal clear. but WAY less expensive.
The methyl alcohol is supposed to make things burn cleaner.
It is available from some mfrs as "Wick Cleaner" or "Fuel treatment."
Some say it burns off any residual water in the kero that would clog up the heater's wick.
Dunno.
But, as all the local outlets are out of the clear stuff, I may try the methyl treatment to use the red kero I have.
Otherwise, I guess it'll be used to wash parts.......

ps...the stuff is very thin and watery....I really don't think it is diesel.

Ron,

One of the characteristics of alcohol is that it's hygroscopic, meaning that it absorbs water. Which maybe an advantage to adding it to a fuel so any water doesn't settle out to the bottom of the tank where it might be sucked up into the fuel line. It is commonly sold as "Fuel Line Antifreeze" for automobiles in the winter.

I have never seen any dyed fuel oil, except that which could be used illegally in on-the-road machinery to power diesel engines. The dye is put there merely as a means of identification, so that tax evading offenders may be caught "red handed"... There is nothing in a wick heater that is anywhere near as demanding (of a clean fuel) as the fuel injectors of a diesel engine! I still maintain that what you are seeing is #2 fuel oil, which I agree is NOT as purely refined as K-1 kerosene. Meaning yes, it will smoke more than K-1 and yes it may well carbon up your wicks, but what the hell, wicks are cheap enough to replace.

The question remains as to whether or not you should burn anything in an enclosed space that consumes O2 and produces CO as well as CO2. And my answer to that is absolutely NOT!!! Never run that type of heater if it does not have access to fresh air. (An open window, etc...) Using a heater of that sort in an enclosed space could very well lead to death! And if you are dead, what you paid for, or saved on the fuel you burned won't matter at all!! Be safe!

I think you're inviting disaster using a Kerosene heater in an enclosed structure, check out indoor propane or better yet, a natural gas unit but you'll need a tank .

Boo,

Although LPG or NPG does burn cleaner than K-1 or diesel fuels, they still should not be burned in an enclosed space without access to fresh air. All you'd be doing is limiting the hydrocarbons that would be put into the air by using LP gas, (The stuff that makes Bert-Man's eyes water.. ) Eyes watering is one thing, Lungs not getting enough O2, or too much CO2 is quite something else.

Re: MTD Yardman Transaxle Rebuild

share a little fire side morning humor with you all...........

Three guys were sitting together bragging about how they had given their new wives duties.

The first guy had married a woman from Iowa and had told her that she was going to do dishes and house cleaning. It took a couple days, but on the third day, he came home to a clean house and dishes washed and put away.

The second guy had married a woman from Illinois. He had given his wife orders that she was to do all the cleaning, dishes, and the cooking. The first day he didn't see any results, but the next day, he saw it was better. By the third day, he saw his house was clean, the dishes were done, and there was a huge dinner on the table.

The third guy had married a girl from Wyoming. He told her that her duties were to keep the house cleaned, dishes washed, lawn mowed, laundry washed and hot meals on the table for every meal. He said the first day he didn't see anything, and the second day he didn't see anything, but by the third day some of the swelling had gone down and he could see a little out of his left eye, enough to fix himself a bite to eat and load the dishwasher

Heard a slightly different version, but the end result was the same.......
