(And it was germane!) In any event, "Welcome Aboard".. Please check in with Boo-Boo (the purser) to pay for your ticket..

Edged tools

By now most of you guys know I'm an eclectic old fool who collects a variety of things, one of them being edged tools. Well, the day before yesterday (Sunday) I went to the local flea market and found a nice, 2" socket style chisel which due to it's size, I'd call a "slick". At first I couldn't see that it was signed, which was a bit of a disappointment, but I was able to buy it for $2.00, so I wasn't terribly disappointed.

When I got it home and cleaned up a bit I could see some lettering. Additional cleaning revealed that it was a WITHERBY from Winsted, Conn. Witherby chisels are very collectable, even though this one was made long after TH Witherby had most likely passed on. The history of the company is quite interesting. This website sheds some light on how the company developed over the years: http://galootcentral.com/membersites/brianwelch/witherby/index.htm

Anyway, I spent yesterday afternoon working on the chisel, cleaning and regrinding the socket mouth, then sharpening edge to 1,500 grit. You can split hairs with it now! The next job was to turn and fit a new handle. The turning went alright, but I didn't get the taper exactly right and now it's firmly stuck into the socket and I can't get it out for a final fitting. Maybe number-one-step-son will be able to get it free.. (He's strong as a bull, so I have high hopes.)

As long as no body replies they usually stop, until Admin or the Mods get rid of it .
this site is corp owned...so just how many mods, admins do you think are really into zapping spam on the days off? Private owned forums are falling to the way side...I hate spammers.....oh look..coffee!:licking:

Solution: the admins need to make you a moderator. Then you can delete all the spam when you log on in the morning!

Doc,

Things are looking up! I took the slick over to my neighbors, (he's the one who pulls up all the lobster traps every morning, he's also nearly 20 years younger than I am) we clamped the chisel in his vise and then both of us muckled onto the new handle and twisting with all our might got it loose. I spent another hour fitting the taper into the socket and then dropped the end of the handle on a section of rail Road track I keep around as an anvil, allowing the weight of the slick to seat itself. The handle went in all but 1/16". I figured that was alright so I am now applying several coats of urethane.

What sort of old (I assumer they are old) tools do you collect? I also collect vintage block planes. I recently added a nice Stanley #65 like this one: https://www.ebay.com/i/132271014480?chn=ps&dispItem=1 I paid $5 for it, but after looking it up, I felt bad, so I'm going to give the guy $20.

Here's a picture of part of my collection in my shop window.
