Starter Problem

I have a LT 1500 Craftsman riding mower. The starter drive will not go up. I took starter apart and noticed a magnet loose. Will this cause the drive not to go up and engage? Also, what glue do I use to adhere magnet?

Not sure where the magnet is that you're speaking about but never seen a magnet involved in a starter bendix
The bendix should engage when the starter spins up - there is probably a spiral on the starter shaft that makes it travel up to the flywheel then a spring to return it to it's original position on the starter when the mower starts.
Maybe post a pic of the magnet you're referencing

Your starter is deceased
Very rare for a magnet on a USA made one to come loose unless the owner has been whacking the side of the starter with a hammer
Very common for a cheap imported one to come loose

That's only for the ignition system - most are built into the flywheel- the " coil " is adjustable and should have a small airgap that reacts to the magnet on the flywheel and creates the spark and also helps charge the battery.

The starter motor is his problem
His Bendix is not rising because to starter is spinning slow due to the bad magnet

Bert has hit the solution on the head, replace the starter motor. Don’t worry about the ignition system.

For future reference, starters are supposed to be serviced at some point- preferably annually. Boat starters freeze because the Bendix shaft isn't lubed and these would be the same- turn the gear opposite of the normal direction and the gear will move, so the shaft can be lubed. If you lube the chassis and steering, etc, do this at the same time.
