What gets rid of the smell of skunks? My poor dog got sprayed and now he is stuck in the garage until I find something to take the smell away. I am willing to try anything, poor guy hates being alone.

I have absolutely no first hand experience with skunks, but I've heard many times that tomatoe juice works to remove the smell.

Tomato juices can work but it is hit or miss depending on how long ago the dog was sprayed. You might try a mixture of vinegar, baking soda and dish liquid. Beware when you mix the first two. You can also get some professional sprays that work well. I believe that Simple Green makes one.

Time and a lot of wind. I would try vinegar and tomato juice. Maybe not at the same time, but it's worth a shot. Bathe her every single day too.

LOTS of baths, does not matter what mixtures you use... then follow with lots of baths...

Also remember to use a conditioner, all that bathing and soap/detergent is going to dry your doggie out... don't want to give full body dandruff ...

skunks are sure fun.. most dogs and everyone else remembers them for a LONG time after their first encounter... (some forget almost over night) :smile:KennyV

I tried tomato juice and it doesn't seem to be doing anything for him, when he is wet it smells so much worse as well, in the last few days she has been bathed 5-6 times, I bought him a doggy conditioner too with extra moisturizers. The poor thing, he smells so bad, but I can't bring him in smelling like that, I have to go see the vet tomorrow and see what they recommend, apparently they have something called "skunk be gone" hopefully that works because I hate him being exiled to the kennel in the garage.

The OXI - OXY type laundry soap works well -- the oxi binds to the smell and helps remove it -- rinse repeatedly and use conditioner -- it may bleach the color some on a dark dog, but the hair will grow back to normal color.

Mix the soap powder with warm water before application.

Good luck -- I made the mistake once of bringing our Chocolate lab in to the spare bathroom to give her the baths --- BIG mistake :ashamed: -- whole house smelled of SKUNK for a long time !

I am disappointed, I bought some "skunk be gone" and he still smells like a skunk. I will have to go see if I can buy some oxy detergent and see if that works, I am beginning to get frustrated.

Once that Skunk chemical is IN the skin it will take some time for it to completely go away the oxy will help (leave it on for a little while - it won't hurt the skin) (do read instruction cautions) and you can use the rest in your wash so it won't go to waste.
