meter should read (0) not move, if it does you have continuity, remove purple lead from key switch and try again, if you still get continuity one or more of the safety switchers are closed making the path to earth, so check them, or the coil is bad and needs replacing.

I need to go out and do some shopping so will be away from PC for about an hour, but will be back later.

If you pull the small wire off the coil (kill/grounding wire), it should spark and will eliminate any thoughts of problems with the engine. You must first start at the source of your spark. (flywheel/coil) Then with the small kill wire removed (and you get spark), you will know for certain that the integrity of the ignition system on the engine is indeed functioning and you can go to the next step in the process of elimination.

Now we are at the meat & potatoes of a problem. This ignition system is so simple and if you have installed the correct (Magnatron solid state) coil and the flywheel magnets to the coil are gapped to a business card, and you have the spark plug body grounded as you test, there "will" be spark. Make sure it is dark so you can see the spark. The spark is not always a bright flash. If still no spark, I am certain the coil is NG

Set your DMM to 20voltsdc, put the battery lead back on, set up the mower ready to start, set key ignition to (run), now with DMM working on the back of the ignition switch put one lead on the (B) the other on (M) you should have no volts (0) if you do there is a path to earth.
