Rant About New Members Section Content...

I think you all know where I'm going with this.

There are just so many people in the New Members section posting questions!

The New Members section is for new members to introduce themselves, not ask questions, we have a perfectly good section dedicated to lawn mower questions!

Maybe there is something that could be done about this ? I don't know what, but surely there is something ?

Its the same as over on TBN, where new members post their tractor queries in the "New Members" section despite advice to the contrary. Over there I can understand them being overwhelmed by the size of the site and just hope posting in "New Members" will get them advice. But on LMF the site is very small and user-friendly, and it appears the majority of new members are either unable to read, or just too lazy to use the proper category for their problem.

Exactly. People need to start obligating to the rules!

There are no excuses!

Are you a LMF moderator? What is the basis for your assertion that questions can not be asked in the New Members section?

No, I am not a moderator.

the New Members section is for introductions only, as you will see if you click on the heading and read it.

Also, we have a section for questions.

This is the description of the New Members section. Where does it say questions can not be ask?

"New to the site? Say hello and connect to other members here."

Do you think it's possible that new members would feel frustration when they join and ask their first question but instead of getting an answer they get reprimanded for not following your "rules".

Say "hello"! Hello doesn't mean ask questions.

And also, there have been lots of questions asked in the New Members section, and they have all been moved into the questions section. Doesn't that tell you that I am right in saying that the New Members section isn't for questions!?

Repeat ... Where does it say questions can not be ask? The questions to which you refer were move in order to more effectively get an answer. They were not moved because it's against the "rules" to post question in the New Members section. Before you reprimand any more new members for violation your "rules" perhaps you should know what the rules really are.

And perhaps you should get rid of your rotten attitude.

I was simply saying I was sick of people using the New Members section as a questions section, I was not saying I'm the LMF king.

There are friendly ways of saying things, and nasty ways, I think we all know the way you are using.

You guys cool it, because I am the LMF King....:laughing: That's FRIENDLY, don't get me started on NASTY.....:frown:

Anybody who has been a member of LMF for a dozen posts knows their way around, but I think the new members don't, or just don't care much. And it may be just my biased opinion, but if they tried to post a repair query in the proper place, odds are it would end up in the wrong one. Since the vast majority of newbies have little mechanical aptitude, most likely many of them don't know the difference between a float bowl and a flipper camshaft lobe...heck, even I don't know that one myself. And, do you realize how easy it is for Briana to inflate her post count putting all the newbie queries into the proper place?

It isn't hard to put the question either in the section for your mower brand, or in the general repairs section.

All hail JDGreen - The LMF King! *Bows*

On a more serious note, we previously had a link to post in the new member forum immediately after members registered. I have removed that link and we now direct people to the main forum page in an effort to get new members to choose a section more relevant to their thread topic. Hopefully this will cut down on some of the posts in the new members forum that shouldn't be there.

That should help a bit, but maybe you could put a notice in the New Members section saying "Please don't post lawn mower questions in here" or something ?

That way they would have no excuse.

It might help if under the forum heading New Members , where it says New to the site? Etc ... If it would say something like " This is for introductions only. If you have questions, please post them in the appropriate forum and not here."

Hi Guys,

You'll notice the out of place threads in the New Member Forum have almost completely diminished since Muhammad changed the redirect. Yay!

Thanks Muhammad!

Oh, and P.S. I moved this thread to the Site Discussion forum. Simply for organizational purposes.

What about a vocal notice then ?

"Don't post questions in the New Members section - If you do, I will come and beat the **** out of you"

Just repeat that through their speakers on a loop

This has always been a gripe of mine. I had more sympathy for the n00bs when I found out the way the registration process was set up to make a newbie think that there was nothing more to the forum, or one needed a postcount to be met first to post anywhere other than the newbie section.

HOWEVER, if you are is such a rotten hurry for an answer to a question you can't even LOOK to see there is more to the site, I tend to think the search function was also not used to look for an answer to a question that has probably been asked a million stinkin times.

That denotes laziness, and that makes me irate. If you don't like it, too stinkin bad.

Thanks, Muhammad, for changing the way it works - now there is no excuse to not look at the rest of the site.

If that were the attitude of admin, the threads wouldn't keep getting moved. We have sections for a reason - to make things easier to find.

Then again, if nobody is ever searching anything - just asking the same stuff over and over again - I guess it doesn't matter.

You may be a noob to this site, but your question may NOT be new. Do a smidgen of work for yourself and make use of the great search feature of the site! It may get your answer quicker, and not annoy those of us who like the organization.

Exactly. They can mention what they own, but if they want to ask how to fix it, go to the correct section.

Personally I've never used the member forum, I figured just posting in the general or one of the brand specific forums was enough of an introduction. So what your saying is that someone can only Introduce themselves and say what type of mower they have but can't discuss or carry on a conversation about any problems they may have with there equipment. That is interesting.

I'm sure Muhammad would agree that technical questions are not meant for the New Members section.

I think that's the point, it's not a big deal. I don't see the problem with a newcomer discussing the problems they have with a mower or piece of equipment in the members forum. After there done they will move to one of the other forums.
It's up to the admin, if he wants the thread moved he'll do so.

Concur...if a newbie needs help he should post where he feels is useful for him...know what, I almost never visit the newbie section myself.
