Racoons in the basement?

I have a friend who is struggling with a pack of raccoons (3-4) who have moved into his empty rental property. Does anyone know how to safely get rid of raccoons?

If shooting is unacceptable then put an apple into a live trap. I've had success with that approach. One thing you don't want to do is get them cornered. They can and will fight viciously!

Shooting would be unacceptable to me, but it would be fine for him. The thing is, someone told him that he would never be able to get off the shots fast enough unless he was sure to kill each one the first time with one shot. Does anyone know if this is true?

Probably true -- why shoot inside the basement -- put some food outside maybe a trail to a pile of old fruit or dog food. when they are out -- then shoot or close off the openings into the basement. Racoons will go to the food !

He says when they tear open containers of food, they deliberately leave paw prints all over the craziest places just to taunt him. I am serious. Not kidding.

That is about right ... bad to have around in groups, they do team up...
I had a problem with a covey of Racoon that would regularly beat up on my barn cats. I did finally eliminate the problem. Good luck there is no easy way. KennyV

You....finally...eliminated the problem? Since you talked about shooting them before, and packs are harder and more dangerous to hit...I'm having this image of you, a pack of raccoons and a rapid fire machine gun.

Racoon's are peculiar. This group of them ran up kind of sideways, a strange way to run...
but it was impressive.
If they were not giving my cats such a bad time, I would have left them alone... but yes I did shoot them.
