Push Mowers on Lawn Care Trailer

#1

For my 2014 trailer setup I need a way to secure my push mower(s) in between lawns. I will be going pretty slow, so it doesn't need to be much, though.

I was thinking about getting something like this, but I think $35 is too expensive for a piece of metal! Jungle Jim's Accessory Products | Transport Lockdowns | Jungle Boot Small

Any homemade designs, or should I use bungee cords or something?

Yeah that might work! I'm trying to figure it out. So it can extend across the trailer and act as a "wall", correct?

Yes, Pull it out as far as it go snug on both sides then crank the ratchet to draw it so the bar doesnt fall down when going down the road. I use one on my truck when hauling 1-3 pushmowers to keep from rolling back and forth.

How about just a bungee...

Yeah that would be pretty easy. I like the idea of a "wheel boot" though.

bungee cord has always worked for me

Bungee cords are cheap quick to use and efficient to use you have an expanded metal gate you run a bungee through the handle of your mower to the gate especially if your not driving far or fast it will be effecient. A milk crate will be good for gas cans string and a few misc tools. And your small equipment can easily be strapped down to the wood if you got a couple big screw in eyes .. its a circle with a screw bottom screw it into the wood where you need them to keep your small stuff secure. Milk crates are also good for hand held blower... All this is cheap and efficient

Yeah I will definitely use a milk crate to hold my gas cans....thanks.

I run an enclosed trailer, but I put 2 small d rings on the side wall the right distance apart right above the deck and put a bungee cord stretched around the motor right above the deck. It works great. If you needed them more stable you could use a cheap ratchet strap.

I use bungees and have in the past nailed a 2 by 4 behind the rear wheels to hold them in place

The 2x4s work good I put one in front of the front tires and one behind the rear tires.

Yeah that would be cheaper, but I don't know if I would rather drill holes in the floor for the wood pieces, or holes in the metal side for the wheel boot.

If you drill holes in your trailer metal you will expose metal and it can start to rust

That's true and in 30 years you will be sorry you drilled them holes.

You could just paint the holes.

If you like your trailer I wouldn't use a ratcheting cargo bar. They work nice for a pickup but for a trailer there a no no. I'd go with the boot or bungee cords.

Unless you have some good metal drill bits, drilling holes in the floor would be the way to go depending on the thickness of your plywood. It's not like your trying to restrain q 700lb mower.

Thats what I use is the thick black rubber bungee cords from TSC it makes it alot quicker. This is a good thread though because I am always looking for a better way of securing equipment for transport.

I use bungee cords a lot but I stay away from the black ones because the sun in the summer they break. Maybe I pull them to tight?

By the time you finish securing your mower and secure it again I've finished the lawn.If your z doesn't fit don't do the job! I have 180 stops and they were not hard to find.Just a couple of months

Guys that say if they cant cut with zero turn they do not mow it are not really in the lawn care business not to me.
We have lots of ditches at roads here and zero or walkbehinds not the best choice but push mower eliminates lots of trimming.
We turn down almost nothing because I look ar dollars no my guys labor as a whole

We had one of those with my other company it was about 20" wide and about 2 feet deep we just let the grass grow to the top and weedeated it level every week I tryed once to use the lawn mower on the walls but there was just no way lol

Yep for some reason these where cut out about 30 Ft wide, and 8, or 10 ft deep with the steep sides. I could mow one swipe on the bank with a rider, and had to trim the rest.

On steep ditches at the road I use a MTD yardbug. It is not fast at all but sticks hills very good. And it is small so goes thru gates that most riders won't.

On banks like the one you describe I generally use my Grandstand, if there to steep for the GS I'll use the Turf-Master mower. Do the same with retention ponds.

That's the nice thing about the Grandstand, you have the best of both a ztr and a walk behind.

I love toro grandstands will be primary mowers for us but will still keep kubotas for leaf season as power is just 3x greater than verticle shaft belt powered mowers.
And push mower on every trailer for places grandstand cannot go. We get these little steep sided ditches that you just dont want to cut with walkbehind or weedeat. But cheap pushmower makes quick work.

I suppose you cold use some type of bicycle locking system but why would you want to lock down a push mower?

OnGuard Key Cable Lock 6ftx12mm - Normal Shipping Ground

I use it when I will be away from my trailer for more than a few minutes or when I go into a store I like to make it a little harder to steal stuff I use a bike lock with my snow blowers to in the back of my truck and I use to have a long dog run cord on my other trailer went through all the equipment and padlocked it all but now with my new locking boxes I just need to lock my mowers and weedeaters with a little cable

The big problem with locking something up is it basically doesn't prevent someone from taking anything because if they want your equipment a bike lock or what ever isn't going to stop them, I mean really a good pair of bolt cutters works in seconds so why waste money buying something there just going to destroy. If you so worried about someone taking equipment just buy some insurance to cover it. At least that way you can get something out of it.

I realize that but the lock will keep the thieves of convience from simply walking away with stuff. If someone is going to to through the trouble to cut a lock and load up my lawn mower nothing is going to stop them but when I only leave ky trailer for minutes at a time I think it more than serves its purpose haven't gotten anything stolen yet so.....

Like I said if someone wants the stuff bad enough there nothing your going to do to stop them convenient or not and personally the way I look at is you or anyone else don't have anything on any trailer that's worth going to jail for.

I agree. It's just like anything else you lock up ( car, home, out buildings, etc..). It's just to ease your mind and make someone go that extra mile to get into your belongings.

Yep people want my stuff they are going to work for it lol I am buying another lock for my garage its a smartphone lock its like a giant bolt with no access to it from the outside except through your smartphone (doesn't need network just Bluetooth) and only works with your phone ons try it I already have 2 deadbolts and a locking handle with 3 in screws in all the hardware and the frame reinforced with steel the garage door is bolted to the floor and bolts through the rail and a chain lock someone wants in there they are going to have to drive through a wall lol

It all depends on where you live and what environment you grew up in. I'm sure it has been a long while if at all that you had to struggle with money and live in low income neighborhoods. Some people forget what it is like.

I think everyone or most everyone will go through the same basic process with locking the doors on their house before going to bed and maybe set the alarm system and locking up their car although I know a lot of people who do not do either. I leave my truck in the drive at night and it's locked but I don't go to extremes, that's why I have Homeowners Insurance to cover everything.

I think they where not just asking about securing a push mower from theft but also some way to keep it from rolling around on the trailer as well.
