I've read on forums the dip stick cap should set on top of the tube while others say screw it in . Which is it ?

Depends on engine manufacturer. Kohler, Kawasaki, Honda all have the dipstick set on top of the threads. Briggs has you screw the dipstick down. I have come across a few Kaws and Kohlers were the instructions are to screw the cap on.

To check level screw the cap on. It is a minimal difference at best anyway.

Simple logic to me is: Does the engine run with the cap loose or the cap tight? Why would you check the oil with the cap loose?

About 8 ounces different in fluid in most cases. And the engine manufacturer makes the decision to how the oil is checked for proper fill level.

I think you are exagerating the ounces.

That is in reply to ILENGINE. Otherwise read the dipstick or owner's manual.

My Deere X-370 manual says check with cap unscrewed, so I do. It's a 2022 model. I'm sure procedure varies from brand to brand and model to model. Cheers!
