No start

Grounded the plug. No spark. disconnected the "kill" wire. No spark. Coil installed correctly. It's marked"out". I don't think you could make the electrical connections if it were installed upside down. Didn't hit anything. Will try and check the crankshaft keyway, it's a long shot but who knows.

Sheared flywheel key in this won't prevent spark. Would effect starting and running but will still produce spark.

Technically it is a CDI. The new style briggs ignition modules are Capacitive Discharge Ignition.

People tend to use coil and ignition module interchangeably but are not the same thing actually

Coil is installed correctly.

Post up pictures here of the coil and kill wire which is a small black wire.

Chances are could be a Chinese clone coil or simply defective.

If you ground that small gauge wire, you get no spark.

Is this a walk behind type mower with handle you pull to release the flywheel brake? If it is make sure the cable is not sliding upwards where the 7/16 nut is by pull handle. if it slide up the kill switch at the motor will not open and you will not have spark. Cable end should be about 1/2 to 1 inch sticking out at the clamp with the 7/16 nut.

Kill switch is not being pulled far enough so no spark. Adjust brake handle cable tighter, cable will slide after time and will need adjustment.

In the old cars and tractors with point ignitions the capacitor was in the distributor with the points. The coil was separate. We used to charge the capacitor and leave it lying on the bench for unsuspecting curious visitor to grab. One guy picked it up and got shocked and I said, "bit ya didn't it?", and he said "no, just don't take me long to look at one."
