Am I missing something on this thing? I took the top clip off the transaxle pulley, and have been banging on that thing like crazy. Is it just that dang hard or am I missing another clip or something?

You do not need to remove the top pully.
You can split the tranny with it in place/
They rust on sold and I oft need to press the pulley off the shaft.
It just makes it harder to get to the bolts with the pulley in place.
That pulley is easily bent and the shaft is held in place by a E clip so too much smacking will dislodge the clip . bend , break or crack the housing.
You cah heat it red hot if required then hit it with PB Blaster or similar that usually shifts stubborn shafts.
Rust disolver solutions ( not pastes or converters ) can also free it up

Careful, if I remember right there is a bolt in a recess under the pulley which must be remove to split the halves. If you can't split the halves with all the edge bolts out, look for this bolt.

Don't remember a bolt hiding is a recess but there were a few that were 1/12 of a turn at a time.
OTOH I have opend up about 40 boxes this past month looking for bits to pirate.
Weird that you can go for a year without touching a box then get 5 in one month.

BETTER LOOK at this you-tube video BEFORE gettin in over your head...... it took me 2 days to get my pulley off..
loads of PB Blaster, and a torch with plenty of beating on the pulley shaft... you must use a brass or slightly smaller diameter than shaft..... punch , so you dont mushroom the top of the shaft, After you remove the C-clip... the
key here is patience and determination......Hope this info. is helpful .........Boobala
