If you have the model I think you do, read my previous post, about a trick to make it easier. Also post your model number located under the seat.

my model #247.289050 also have number 13AL79SS099 mine is 20hp lt2000 owners manual say's Hydrostatic Transmission 42" deck, i bought it in 2010. I called MTD and sear's for belt prices and all they could find was one belt not the second belt and there the ones that made the mower and sear's is the one that sold the mower. I don't know if they put the wrong trans. in from the factory.

And head Carscw's post about belts.
You can not put anything on an MTD Variable pitch pulley other than MTDs own belts.
They are wider than any standard belt and shallower.
Replacing them with std B section belts will work OK for a short while then the lower 3 speed will not drive and the tensioning pulley will either rub against the deck or one of the other pulleys, forgtton which.
One of the first really big stuff ups I got myself into.
I buy my MTD belts from Jacks
Down here hey are $ 129 & $ 75 each plus GST so I though I was being real smart by using B section belts.
The customer was over the moon when they got it back as they were quoted $ 395 for the job I charged $ 200 for but it was back before the end of the season because the belts had worn just enough not to drive .
As a warrantee job I had to go buy original belts & fit them for free, A lesson hard learned but never forgotten.

Finaly figured it out, they gave me the wrong owner's manual. Ordered two wrong spring's and belt, but was able to cancel belt in time. Lot easier to fix with the right model number.. Thank's for getting me on the right track to begin with on this site.

Glad i found this site and your post, i have craftsman lt2000 2010model 247.289050. It has two belt's and mtd and sear's couldn't even find the second belt. I was beginning to think they sold me the wrong mower. The spring broke somewhere and i couldn't find where it goes, still don't know yet, but on the right track now with your post. My owner's manual say's Hydrostatic Transmission and don't know if that's the right owner's manual. At least now i'm on the right track. Like you said 194.00 to change but that includes the belt's. I think they sold me tractor with wrong trans.

After alot of searching i found out that sear's gave me the wrong owner's manual, my model #247.28904, Belt's 954-04263,=Type5lx39.9 Lg Poly and 954-0467=type5l, 90.80,Poly.

I returned belt's to amazon, no problem there. Then i went to sear's and bought the right belt's MTD They are wider and deeper, will only use oem next time. I put the belt's on in a couple hour's. Best way i found out to change is turn the mower on it's right side with deck removed. Remove small belt, then long drive belt, put rear belt on first and through the pulley's by removing the one pulley then put the front belt around engine pulley and install pulley. On rear pulley you can force it out and back in. Replace small belt and your done. Run's as good as the day i bought it now. Nothing was realy wrong with it just lot's of crack's in belt, but i figured it would brake at the worst possible time. But originally a spring broke that hold's tension on the small belt and caused it to stop moving when belt fell off. That's when i inspected the other belt. All's good now.

This thread is looking as if all this BS is a good nuff reason to avoid any/all varispeed products made by MTD labeled under numerous brand names. I learned my lesson about 20 years ago when I repaired a neighbor's Ranch King or some such name made by MTD. That money saved at Sears on an MTD product blew out the window on the way home and the new proud owner didn't even realize it.
