LT 2000 aluminum transmssion varidrive belt replacement?

Has anyone come up with a way to replace the drive belts ( two of 'em, one, 91 inch 21/32" wide V belt for motor to varidrive pulley other 41 inch V belt around the varidrive/ tensioner / tranny pulleys) on this old turkey: MTD made/Sears sold 20 hp B&S engine about ten years old). The owner manual indicates that it's too complicated for a home owner & the dealer wants $190 to replace them. The belts themselves cost about $10-12 (both) if you buy 'em from vbeltsfor less - about one fifth as much as Sears wants for them.

First thing are the belts oem or some clone?
Try taking the belt guides off the variable speed pulley. If I remember right you have to take the shift lever bracket off.

You can go here. And enter the part number. If you don't have it you can go to find models like mine.

I've figured it out ... the 21HP variation speed, 46 deck Model No. 247.288851ä Craftsman owners manual said that belt replacement couldn't be done by owners & MTD/SEAR's designers didn't allow enough clearance between the tractor's´ sheet metal frame and & its under-seat tranny/varidrive system to pull either of its belts off . I finally decided to remove rear axle /tranny combo (8 bolts altogether - two each at end of the axle up through through spacer & upper clamp, two short horizontal, self threading bolts through the side of the frameç—´ sheet metal "box" just above the axle clamping bolts which connect the varidrive/tranny assembly to it & two more which clamp the front of the tranny to a sheet metal frame crossbar: To actually replace belts, I 1st disconnected the tranny belt tensioning spring from the driver;s side sheet metal frame by tying wire to its hooked end, wrapping the other end around a wooden stick to protect my hands & pulling to unhook the spring from the frame): 2nd: removed the seat & battery support straps, jacked the tractor up off the wheel/axle/tranny combo & reached in from above to slip the belts onto pulleys. The t 41 belt went in OK but seemed to be a bit tight (maybe has a deeper V than the original which was too chewed up to tell). The next problem was that my new 91 inch long (outside measurement) vbelts4less main drive belt was definitely too short to replace the 90.8 vbelt described in the Sears owners manual because the OEM belt apparently (the original was too chewed up to tell) has a shallower-than-standard "V" which renders its inside length longer than that of "90.8" standard configuration belt. I also noted that this machine's drive/clutch tensioning system is poorly designed because both of its pulleys are flat bottomed - one should be V shaped. I went back to vbelts4less looking for Sears no 954 4067A & found its apparent equivalent under ”cub cadet , no. 754-4067 (no A) for about $19 plus shipping. Finally, I then looked for/found a new "MTD Cub Cadet Toro OEM Replacement Variable Speed Belt 954-0467A 754-0467 from pantanopowerequipment on eBay for $16.95 - free shipping -which I've ordered.

The source you suggested http://www.mtdparts.com/equipment/mt...FRJk7Aod-gcAcQ sells the same belt for $36.99 and Sears wants $42.

This Craftsman lawn tractor is a very poorly designed machine because the belts of any sort of belt-equipped equipment should be simple/easy to replace. That weakness is tacitly admitted by the owner'smanual (i.e., you are supposed to pay your dealer roughly ~$200 to replace its drive belts) but is unlikely to be noticed until the warrantee is gone. The home owner/customer's roblems are compounded by fact that the USA doesn't require manufacturers to adopt a rational (standardized) belt description system which makes buying a much cheaper generic replacement part difficult.

Man that's a lot of work.

I asked about the belts because MTD uses their own pitch.
I always get my belts off eBay.
The dealer wants $120 for my toro belt
eBay $42

If you have the unit I think you do, there is an easier way to change the belts. There should be two bolts on the back left side of the frame. If you loosen them the variable pulley will shift away from the frame, so you can change the belts.

I think I watched a YouTube video on doing it like this. But was not sure.

Thanks much - isn't in a shame that the owners manual doesn't mention this? -

Glad i found this site and your post, i have craftsman lt2000 2010model 247.289050. It has two belt's and mtd and sear's couldn't even find the second belt. I was beginning to think they sold me the wrong mower. The spring broke somewhere and i couldn't find where it goes, still don't know yet, but on the right track now with your post. My owner's manual say's Hydrostatic Transmission and don't know if that's the right owner's manual. At least now i'm on the right track. Like you said 194.00 to change but that includes the belt's. I think they sold me tractor with wrong trans.

If you have the model I think you do, read my previous post, about a trick to make it easier. Also post your model number located under the seat.

my model #247.289050 also have number 13AL79SS099 mine is 20hp lt2000 owners manual say's Hydrostatic Transmission 42" deck, i bought it in 2010. I called MTD and sear's for belt prices and all they could find was one belt not the second belt and there the ones that made the mower and sear's is the one that sold the mower. I don't know if they put the wrong trans. in from the factory.

And head Carscw's post about belts.
You can not put anything on an MTD Variable pitch pulley other than MTDs own belts.
They are wider than any standard belt and shallower.
Replacing them with std B section belts will work OK for a short while then the lower 3 speed will not drive and the tensioning pulley will either rub against the deck or one of the other pulleys, forgtton which.
One of the first really big stuff ups I got myself into.
I buy my MTD belts from Jacks
Down here hey are $ 129 & $ 75 each plus GST so I though I was being real smart by using B section belts.
The customer was over the moon when they got it back as they were quoted $ 395 for the job I charged $ 200 for but it was back before the end of the season because the belts had worn just enough not to drive .
As a warrantee job I had to go buy original belts & fit them for free, A lesson hard learned but never forgotten.

Thank's for the warnning, when you try and be too cheap sometimes it end's up costing us more. I've had that happen too trying to save money and in the end thought i should of just spent the money and did it the right way. Well at least you helped me to make the right choice, Thank's.

Finaly figured it out, they gave me the wrong owner's manual. Ordered two wrong spring's and belt, but was able to cancel belt in time. Lot easier to fix with the right model number.. Thank's for getting me on the right track to begin with on this site.

After alot of searching i found out that sear's gave me the wrong owner's manual, my model #247.28904, Belt's 954-04263,=Type5lx39.9 Lg Poly and 954-0467=type5l, 90.80,Poly.

I returned belt's to amazon, no problem there. Then i went to sear's and bought the right belt's MTD They are wider and deeper, will only use oem next time. I put the belt's on in a couple hour's. Best way i found out to change is turn the mower on it's right side with deck removed. Remove small belt, then long drive belt, put rear belt on first and through the pulley's by removing the one pulley then put the front belt around engine pulley and install pulley. On rear pulley you can force it out and back in. Replace small belt and your done. Run's as good as the day i bought it now. Nothing was realy wrong with it just lot's of crack's in belt, but i figured it would brake at the worst possible time. But originally a spring broke that hold's tension on the small belt and caused it to stop moving when belt fell off. That's when i inspected the other belt. All's good now.

This thread is looking as if all this BS is a good nuff reason to avoid any/all varispeed products made by MTD labeled under numerous brand names. I learned my lesson about 20 years ago when I repaired a neighbor's Ranch King or some such name made by MTD. That money saved at Sears on an MTD product blew out the window on the way home and the new proud owner didn't even realize it.
