Obviously some thing is not good so please do the following and report back
Grab the jumpers from your car boot and jump from the battery negative to a good ground on the engine ( drain bolt is usually a good place ) .
Cranks fine = bad ground strap
No difference the hook the other jumper from the + on the starter motor then to the + on the battery
Engine cranks = faulty wiring
Engine does not crank = bad battery or bad starter
Repeat all of the above with a know good battery like from your car

BEcause the JD technical manuals are so well written & so comprehensive , particularly in the way they describe how to test the electrical system & where to test the system I always recommend owners buying them.
COnsidering the price is only a couple of hours of the technicians billing rate they are dirt cheap .
NEVER jump a lawnmower from a Car. You could destroy the Charging system. Check Lawnmower Negative ground connection to frame. It should be shiny and tight. Attach + battery side to Starter electrical lug with one cable. No open fuel around.

You could also weld the + cable to the solenoid.

Rubbish
Car battery , truck battery, jump start pack, 1000 pen light batteries.
All the same and none will do anything to your charging system unless you connect them backwards in which case you usually blow the fuse in which case the charging system is isolated.
An URBAN MYTH perpetrated by people who were asleep during physics class at high school.

Really ?
Some time Slomo I do wonder about you.
This can only happen if there is a dead short in either the solenoid or the starter motor, in which case you will get a monumental spark when the leads are connected.
And funny enough that usually causes people to pull back rather than push on and force the leads onto the terminals

8 volts is a dead battery or poor cables and a bad ground.

Voltage reg has nothing to to with starting the engine.

Replaced battery so now the solenoid clicks but wont crank on Im thinking a bad wire or connection somewhere

Check air filter for replacement, fresh gas, good spark, compression, replace fuel filter if dirty, check all wiring for being tight & secure, Let us know how it goes, thanks, Mark
Check your Engine Operators Manual for settings on intake & exhaust valves & check when engine is cold. If valves are adjusted too loose, compression release on camshaft will not hold exhaust valves open assisting in starting. Post all numbers from engine: model xxxxxx, type xxxx, trim xx & code: engine.

If you can rotate the engine by hand
Get a pair of jumper leads .
Hook one to the battery - then to a good ground on the mower, I like to use the oil drain plug
Turn the key
Engine cranks = bad ground connection
Engine does not crank then put the other lead on the power wire on the starter then touch it to the battery +
engine cranks = starter is good, solenoid or power cables are bad.

Engine does not crank, battery bad, try again with a known good battery like your car
Engine trys to crank but can not, remove the spark plug & repeat
Post they results
