I hope this is the place to ask this question. It's a bit open ended.
While mowing his lawn, my father in law heard a clunk and noticed that what appeared to
oil was coming from the bottom/back of his mower. It's a Husqvarna MZT-61 with a 27hp Briggs engine.

My question is two part.
1. With the engine still on the mower, he was able to push the mower to his garage, he did not need to
disengage the hydro stat. Is that normal? I know on mine zero RT lawnmower I have to disengage the hydro statis
one on each side or wheel.

2. We pulled the motor to look for the culprit that caused the sound, we pulled the plug on each cylinder and discovered that
we could only see one piston head while we rotated the engine, the piston never came to the top of the piston.

My questions are:
Are we correct in assuming the engine has a major issue.
Should we consider the hydro stat also bad or damaged because we could push the mower with the engine still on the frame,
and the hydro stats were not disengaged.

Our debate is do we attempt to fix it, or is it time to find a different mower.

Thanks!
