G’day all,

New here, from the Northern Rivers in NSW. I fix mowers and small engines for people around the area, and I’ve ended up on a job that’s got me scratching my head a bit, so figured it was time to join.

It’s a Toro TimeCutter zero turn with a Kohler 7000 KT725 (spec PS-KT725-3102). Someone had a go at it before me. When I got there the throttle linkage was hooked up wrong and the owner had found a spring lying on the ground. Sorted the linkage, but now it revs way too high and the governor isn’t doing its job.

What I’ve found so far: the governor cross shaft has about 8mm of in-and-out play, so I reckon the retaining ring is missing. I also did the static adjustment the wrong way round (turned it clockwise when the Kohler manual says counterclockwise). The plan is to fit a new ring, set the end play, and redo the adjustment properly. If anyone’s been down this road before with a 7000 series, I’d love to hear how it went, especially if it ended up being something inside.

I’ll post up the full details with photos once I can.

Cheers,

Hello L.,

Welcome to the forum. Thanks for including the engine label information.

With any governor, study the linkage movement. Determine which way the governor shaft/ arm has to move when you put the throttle plate in the wide-open position. The governor shaft has to be turned to a full stop in that same direction.

The governor only has one job and that is to keep the engine from running away with itself. (It governs the top engine running speed) Too many people tinker with them, and it screws up the engine running conditions.

The spring(s) on the governor arm are what provide a running "equilibrium". The governor lever spring(s) have to be in the proper location, so they hold tension on the governor flyweights and keep the throttle from automatically going wide open.

Pictures would help when you get a chance to attach them.

Once you get the governor adjustment figured out, see how it runs. If it has a problem surging up and down, that would be carburetor related and usually not the governor itself.

Let us know your progress. Hopefully you don't have to go inside the engine.
